‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Set to Break Box Office Records in China

Superhero films have faced significant challenges in China over the past few years, with the genre largely missing out on the blockbuster success it once enjoyed. Since Marvel’s major crossover event years ago, comic book movies have struggled to reconnect with Chinese audiences at the level that studios previously took for granted.

This drought has made the anticipation for Tom Holland’s latest Spider-Man film particularly noteworthy, especially since its predecessor never made it to Chinese theaters. With that barrier finally removed, expectations for how the new film will perform overseas have been steadily rising as the release date approaches.

Those expectations have now translated into impressive figures. According to Global Box Office, ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ is currently projected to earn between $130,000,000 and $155,000,000 during its opening weekend in China, making it Hollywood’s biggest live-action film debut in the country since ‘Avengers: Endgame.’ Presales have reportedly exceeded even the most optimistic early projections ahead of the release.

This trajectory aligns with a series of presale milestones the film has already achieved leading up to its opening weekend. Reports from Chinese box office tracking indicate that the film has surpassed the entire presale totals of both ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’ and ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3,’ setting a new post-pandemic record for advance comic book movie sales in the market. Some projections suggest that the film could become the first live-action Hollywood release since 2022’s ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ to cross $100,000,000 during its opening weekend in China.

Much of this momentum has coincided with the film’s global promotional tour, which has seen stars Tom Holland and Zendaya visiting cities like Madrid, Berlin, Rome, Paris, London, and Mexico City before making a notable appearance in Shanghai. This in-person visit to China seems to have significantly boosted local interest, with presales noticeably accelerating in the days following their appearance.

The absence of the previous Spider-Man film from Chinese theaters adds extra significance to this release. That earlier film reportedly never screened in the market due to a scene featuring the Statue of Liberty, a restriction that did not prevent it from grossing nearly $1,900,000,000 worldwide but left a major market untapped. With that obstacle now cleared, some outlets speculate that ‘Brand New Day’ could ultimately surpass its predecessor’s global total.

Domestically, the film is also generating historic numbers, reportedly achieving the best first-day presales of any release in five years, a record previously held by the earlier Spider-Man installment. Combined with China’s rising demand, some trackers have projected global opening weekend totals reaching as high as $550,000,000, a figure that would place the film among the largest superhero debuts ever recorded.

The film continues the story of Peter Parker four years after his last adventure, as he fights crime anonymously in New York City after the world was made to forget his identity, all while facing a formidable new threat linked to an unexpected transformation in his abilities.

With ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ set to open on July 31, all indicators suggest that the film is poised to become one of the defining box office stories of the year, both domestically and in a Chinese market that superhero films have struggled to penetrate in recent times.
