Summer 2026 has proven to be one of the most competitive box office seasons in recent memory, with two distinct blockbusters vying for cultural supremacy. Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ spent weeks appearing invincible, buoyed by stellar reviews and record-setting IMAX numbers, establishing itself as one of the year’s most significant theatrical events.

For a time, it seemed nothing could hinder Nolan’s mythological epic. ‘The Odyssey’ debuted with an impressive $124.5 million domestically and $264.1 million worldwide, then defied typical second-weekend declines by dropping only 27 to 30 percent, adding another $87 to $90 million and pushing its global total past $650 million in just 12 days.

However, that reign has now come to a decisive end. According to Global Box Office, ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has officially overtaken ‘The Odyssey’ at the worldwide box office, needing only four days to surpass the entirety of Nolan’s three-week performance, significantly bolstered by a staggering $123 million debut in China.

This figure is remarkable on its own but becomes even more impressive in context. China has been a challenging market for American superhero films since the pandemic, with Marvel titles barred from release between mid-2019 and early 2023. ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ never screened there, while recent films like ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ and ‘Venom: The Last Dance’ struggled to reach totals in the low tens of millions.

The last superhero film to surpass $100 million in China was ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’ back in 2019, which concluded its run with $199 million. ‘Brand New Day’ not only cleared that milestone on its opening weekend but shattered it, instantly becoming the largest Hollywood superhero opening in the country in seven years, with projections from Chinese trackers like Maoyan suggesting a final total that could exceed $255 million.

This surge in China was part of a broader global phenomenon for the Sony and Marvel Studios release. ‘Brand New Day’ raked in $355 million domestically, marking the second-best North American opening of all time, trailing only ‘Avengers: Endgame.’ Combined with $572 million internationally, it achieved a staggering $927 million worldwide debut, again only behind ‘Endgame’ for the largest global opening in movie history.

For ‘The Odyssey,’ the timing could not be worse. Nolan’s film had been benefiting from strong word of mouth and a 94 percent Certified Fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes, with its third weekend projected to add approximately $51 million domestically, even while competing directly against Tom Holland’s latest portrayal of Peter Parker. While it’s still a commendable run for an R-rated adaptation of a 2,700-year-old poem, it now finds itself completely overshadowed on a global scale.

‘Brand New Day’ is not only winning the box office battle against ‘The Odyssey,’ but it’s also redefining expectations for what a superhero film can achieve internationally in a post-pandemic landscape that many believed had permanently soured on the genre. With a 90 percent Certified Fresh rating from critics and a 98 percent audience score, the film has the reviews to match its box office success, indicating that its momentum in China and beyond is not just a fleeting weekend phenomenon.

Whether ‘Brand New Day’ can maintain this momentum throughout its theatrical run remains to be seen, but its opening weekend has already reshaped the conversation surrounding this summer’s biggest films.
