‘Star City’ Episode 3 Release Date: Major Backstory Twist Stuns Fans
‘Star City’ has just unveiled one of its most shocking twists to date, centered around a significant betrayal.
In episode three of the Apple TV series, titled “Bad Dance,” viewers learn that cosmonaut Valya, portrayed by Adam Nagaitis, has been covertly passing Soviet intelligence to an American spy. This revelation comes from an exclusive interview with SYFY Wire, along with insights from the cast and creators.
Until this pivotal moment, Valya was depicted as a devoted member of the Soviet space program, fully committed to his mission and country’s aspirations in space. However, the final moments of the episode dramatically alter this perception, revealing him as a traitor all along.
In his interview with SYFY Wire, Adam Nagaitis shared that he was aware of the twist from the project’s inception. This knowledge influenced his portrayal of the character throughout the series. He remarked, “I knew from the very beginning. I knew from the first audition. That was a significant part of the attraction.”
Nagaitis explained that understanding Valya’s true nature allowed him to craft the character’s actions more deliberately. He noted, “I wouldn’t have been able to do it otherwise to be honest. I wouldn’t have really been able to frame any of it properly, because I would have found it just as difficult to believe as you.”
Not everyone on set was privy to the twist. Ruby Ashbourne Serkis, who plays Valya’s wife Tanya, stated she was unaware of the betrayal storyline during filming. She expressed that the cast was learning the story alongside the audience, saying, “We didn’t know. We were finding out in real time. Reading the scripts was equally as gripping as watching it.”
The episode also explores how this secret impacts other characters. For instance, Tanya misinterprets Valya’s unusual behavior, suspecting an affair rather than espionage, which adds another layer of tension to the narrative.
In addition to the espionage twist, the series continues to build its science fiction universe. In the same episode, the Chief Designer, played by Rhys Ifans, proposes a mission to Venus using a modified deep-sea submersible, reflecting the show’s focus on an alternate history of the space race and experimental technology.

Co-showrunner Matt Wolpert told SYFY Wire that the Venus storyline was loosely inspired by real scientific concepts. He stated, “There’s definitely some research that went into that. I don’t know if it will hold fully up to the scrutiny of physics.”
The creators of ‘Star City’ aim to blend real scientific ideas with fictional possibilities to explore various outcomes in space exploration history. Co-showrunner Ben Nedivi added, “I think we like to base those types of missions on hardy science.”
‘Star City’ continues to stream on Apple TV, with new episodes released weekly.
