In a bold move during the final episode of ‘The Late Show’, Stephen Colbert utilized a famous piece of copyrighted music in a segment that appeared both intentional and risky for CBS.

Colbert humorously addressed the legal implications of using the ‘Peanuts’ theme music without proper authorization. He emphasized the high value of music rights and hinted that it could lead to lawsuits. Turning to his band leader, Louis Cato, the band began playing the iconic tune.

“Louis, Louis! Is the band right now playing the same Peanuts music I just said people were being sued for, for using without permission? Is that what you’re doing?” he quipped on air.

As the music played on, he added, “Oh no, I hope this doesn’t cost CBS any money!”

‘The Late Show’ was canceled in July 2025. CBS and its parent company Paramount had recently resolved a $16 million lawsuit involving Donald Trump. CBS cited financial reasons for the cancellation, yet some speculated that there were deeper motives, suggesting that Paramount may have ended the show to foster better relations with Trump and facilitate the merger between Paramount and Skydance.
