Stephen King Endorses ‘The Cycle’ as a Must-See Horror Film Coming to Shudder
Genre enthusiasts understand that a quote from Stephen King on a movie poster carries significant weight. The horror legend is known for his selective praise, and when he endorses a film, it often lands on every horror fan’s must-watch list. This is precisely what has occurred with the latest Shudder original making waves in the festival circuit.
The film in question is directed by Jordan Downey, a filmmaker who has steadily gained recognition among genre aficionados in recent years. His 2018 minimalist monster film ‘The Head Hunter’ debuted as the top horror film and boasts a 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics lauding its concise storytelling. He followed this success by writing and directing the “Stork” segment of the Critics Choice Award-nominated anthology ‘V/H/S/Beyond’.
Now, Downey returns with his most ambitious project to date, and Stephen King has fully endorsed it. King described ‘The Cycle’ as “a terrific fright flick,” further characterizing it as “The Thing meets The Silence of the Lambs.” These quotes are prominently featured in the film’s newly released trailer.
The official logline presents a dark mystery: “When the body of a man missing for thirty-six years is discovered at the scene of a horrific crime, it’s up to his estranged daughter to unravel his dark past.” The film stars Deborah Ann Woll, known for ‘True Blood’ and ‘Daredevil’, as Meg, the daughter drawn into the investigation, alongside Jeffrey Donovan of ‘Burn Notice’ fame as Marks.
The cast also features Will Hochman, Jack Doolan, Carl W. Crudup, Jeb Berrier, Gretchen Corbett, and David Myers Gregory. The film runs for 111 minutes. Downey collaborated with longtime partner Kevin Stewart on the screenplay, who also co-wrote ‘V/H/S/Beyond’ with him.

‘The Cycle’ premiered at Fantastic Fest in Austin, where it received a Special Mention in the festival’s Horror Features competition. This kind of festival recognition, combined with King’s endorsement, has placed the film firmly on the radar of genre critics ahead of its streaming debut.
Reviews from Austin were predominantly positive. Bloody Disgusting noted that Fangoria’s EIC Phil Nobile Jr. also praised the film in his festival roundup, although he advised Fangoria readers to watch it before delving into further coverage, stating, “we spoil the shit out of it.”
The film will exclusively debut on Shudder on Friday, Oct. 23, as part of the streamer’s “Season of Screams” programming event. It will be released as a Shudder Original Film, meaning it will not have a theatrical release before arriving on the platform.
The project is produced by James Harris, known for this year’s horror hit ‘Obsession’, alongside producer Peter Heller. This collaboration has generated additional buzz for a film already gaining attention due to King’s remarks.

Comparing a new horror film to both ‘The Thing’ and ‘The Silence of the Lambs’ is no small feat. The former is regarded as one of the defining creature features in the genre, while the latter is celebrated as one of the most acclaimed psychological thrillers ever made. Securing a quote that references both indicates that ‘The Cycle’ combines visceral dread with a more character-driven and unsettling narrative.
This blend aligns with early reactions to the trailer. Dread Central described the trailer as “super grisly,” noting it “promises some serious gore and terror,” and called it “one of the best trailer edits I’ve seen from Shudder in a while.”
Downey’s filmography dates back to the cult comedy ‘ThanksKilling’, but it is his recent projects that have genre outlets paying closer attention. With ‘The Head Hunter’, his segment in ‘V/H/S/Beyond’, and now ‘The Cycle’, he has established a reputation for atmospheric, character-focused horror that stands out in a crowded streaming landscape.
With King’s endorsement now attached, ‘The Cycle’ has the momentum that could elevate Downey to one of the genre’s most closely watched names heading into next year.
