Steven Spielberg Reveals Condition for Collaborating With Netflix
Steven Spielberg has consistently expressed his views on streaming platforms like Netflix, but he recently indicated he might consider a collaboration under one specific condition.
The iconic filmmaker, renowned for his contributions to modern cinema with classics such as ‘Jaws’, ‘E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial’, ‘Jurassic Park’, and ‘Saving Private Ryan’, has long emphasized the significance of the theatrical experience. In earlier remarks reported by Variety in 2018, Spielberg contended that films primarily created for streaming should not compete for Oscars like traditional theatrical releases.
“Once you commit to a television format, you’re a TV movie,” he stated at the time. He further added, “If it’s a good show, you deserve an Emmy, but not an Oscar. I don’t believe films that are just given token qualifications in a couple of theaters for less than a week should qualify for the Academy Award nomination.”
He has repeatedly emphasized that movies should be enjoyed in cinemas with audiences. In another comment, he remarked, “There’s nothing like going to a big dark theater with people you’ve never met before and having the experience wash over you,” adding, “I’m a firm believer that movie theaters need to be around forever.”
Despite his strong stance, Spielberg recently hinted at a potential exception for Netflix during an interview promoting his film ‘Disclosure Day’.
In comments shared during an interview with ITV News, Spielberg mentioned he would be open to collaborating with Netflix, but only if the project was specifically designed for home viewing from the outset. He clarified that his conditions are closely linked to the intended experience of the film.
“So, the idea of sending little cassettes, little DVDs, you know, to individuals to watch a movie, if I did that, I would be happy to work for Netflix and make a movie for Netflix, knowing that it’s only going to be seen by millions of people on their home screens,” he explained.
At the same time, he reiterated that his primary passion lies in the cinema experience. “But I’m a moviemaker and I believe in big motion picture, 70-millimeter theatrical experiences,” he stated, underscoring his preference for large-format theatrical releases.
Spielberg also briefly discussed his filmmaking approach, noting his preference for practical and traditional methods. He mentioned avoiding artificial intelligence for certain creative decisions, such as alien sound effects, opting instead for real-world recordings and modified natural sounds.
With a career spanning over four decades, Spielberg has directed more than 30 feature films and received numerous accolades, including Academy Awards, BAFTAs, Golden Globes, Emmys, and a Grammy. He is also part of the exclusive group of artists who have achieved EGOT status.
Even as streaming platforms transform how audiences consume films, Spielberg’s comments reflect his enduring appreciation for the traditional cinema experience, while leaving a narrow opening for collaboration under the right circumstances.
