‘Street Fighter’ Reclaims Top Box Office Spot and Outgrosses Original in 5 Days
Video game adaptations have often struggled at the box office, and ‘Street Fighter’ is no exception. The franchise’s previous film endeavors were met with poor reception, leading to years of attempts to achieve a successful reboot.
The latest reboot from Paramount and Legendary, directed by Kitao Sakurai, features Andrew Koji as Ryu, Noah Centineo as Ken, and Callina Liang as Chun-Li, with David Dastmalchian portraying M. Bison. The film comes with a reported production budget of $82 million.
In exciting news, ‘Street Fighter’ has recently regained the No. 1 position at the domestic box office, surpassing A24’s documentary ‘You Can See Everything’. Remarkably, it has already outperformed the entire domestic earnings of the original 1994 film in just five days, amassing approximately $35.5 million compared to the original’s $33 million. This achievement marks it as the highest-grossing film in the franchise domestically.
With actuals in, #StreetFighterMovie won the fight on TUE, taking the #1 at US #BoxOffice back from doc #YouCanSeeEverything, and has beaten 1994 #StreetFighter ’s entire 33M run in just 5 days as the franchise’s highest grossing film! It grossed 2.9M on #2 BIGGEST TUE Discount Day ever for fighting video game adaptations, up strong +52.6% from MON (vs 2026 #MortalKombat2’s 3.7M, +34.5%). It hits a 35.5M US cume in 5 days.

On Tuesday alone, the film earned $2.9 million, reflecting a 52.6% increase from Monday. This figure ranks as the second-highest Tuesday discount day ever for a fighting video game adaptation, trailing only this year’s ‘Mortal Kombat 2’, which earned $3.7 million with a 34.5% rise.
While Tuesday boosts are common due to discounted ticket promotions, the scale of this increase is a positive sign. It indicates that the film is performing better than some had anticipated following its opening weekend.
‘Street Fighter’ debuted with $31 million from 3,575 theaters, securing the weekend’s top spot, and added $20.1 million from 65 international markets for a total of $51.1 million globally. Paramount had anticipated a mid-$30 million debut, so the actual results were somewhat underwhelming, with hopes for around $70 million worldwide.
Despite this, the opening weekend exceeded those of previous ‘Street Fighter’ films. The 1994 version opened with just $6.9 million, while 2009’s ‘Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li’ managed only $4.7 million and finished with about $8.7 million domestically.

Audience reception has been a concern, with ‘Street Fighter’ earning a B- CinemaScore, identical to the 1994 film. Critics have offered mixed reviews, with the film holding a 41% rating on Rotten Tomatoes at the latest count. Poor word of mouth could hinder its longevity in theaters.
Analysts suggest that the film needs to gross well over $200 million worldwide to be deemed a success given its budget. Comparisons to ‘Mortal Kombat 2’ are cautionary, as that film concluded its run with $129.5 million worldwide after a $38.5 million domestic opening.

For now, the early box office figures provide some optimism. Director Sakurai has expressed interest in a sequel, although he emphasized that it hinges on audience feedback and fan support. The film’s post-credits scene also teases potential directions for a follow-up.
The upcoming days will be crucial. ‘Street Fighter’ faces stiff competition this weekend with ‘Clayface’ debuting and ‘You Can See Everything’ expanding to around 2,600 theaters. Forecasts suggest the fighting game adaptation could earn between $8 million and $13 million in its second weekend.
This weekend will be the true test to determine if Tuesday’s success was a fleeting moment or the beginning of a more stable performance.
