‘Sugar’ Season 2 Episode 3 Recap John Sugar Survives an Ambush and Uncovers a New Lead
Apple TV’s neo-noir mystery ‘Sugar’ has entered its second season, stripping away the safety net that once surrounded Colin Farrell’s alien private investigator. The results have led to some of the tensest television moments of the summer. Previously, the character had allies from his own kind to rely on, but this season finds him navigating Los Angeles with only human contacts, all of whom remain oblivious to his true identity.
This vulnerability peaked at the end of the last episode, when John Sugar was ambushed by motorcycle gunmen while heading to a meeting related to Ji Moon’s disappearance. The episode concluded with Sugar wounded and slumped in his car, leaving viewers anxious about his fate as the next installment approached.
Episode 3, titled ‘Watch Face,’ quickly addresses that cliffhanger. Instead of prolonging the suspense, ‘Sugar’ opens with Sugar bleeding out behind the wheel in the middle of an intersection.
Despite his injuries, Sugar manages to drive himself to a parking lot where he meets his associate Val. She helps him swap his damaged car for a clean one, but she notices his injuries despite his attempts to downplay them. Choosing to go it alone, he speeds away and makes it to a private safehouse just in time to remove buckshot from his body and hook himself up to an IV for recovery.
While Sugar tends to his wounds, the episode shifts focus to Danny Moon, whose situation has improved since the last chapter. He has gathered enough money to stay afloat and is being considered for a major fight in Las Vegas, a potential turning point after a tough stretch. However, his momentum is complicated by the sudden reappearance of his brother Ji, who is still in danger inside a club.
Danny reaches out to Sugar for assistance, and as Sugar closes in on the situation, he realizes he is being followed. He instructs Danny to stay put while he evades the men tailing him, using his driving skills to shake them off before regrouping. When they finally track Ji down at the club, Ji panics, mistaking Sugar for a police officer, and flees once more, leaving Sugar with nothing but a knock on the head.
The investigation gains momentum when Sugar hears from his contact Tom, who identifies the gang leader connected to the case as a man named Guapo. Armed with this information and a warning from Tom about impending danger, Sugar heads back into Downer Town to follow the lead directly.

In the episode’s final moments, Guapo is killed in a hail of gunfire before Sugar can extract any information from him, temporarily leaving the investigation at a standstill. However, Sugar soon spots a deputy in the area who resembles someone he previously identified in hospital surveillance footage linked to Ji’s disappearance, providing him with a fresh lead as he heads into the next episode.
Outside the main case, ‘Watch Face’ also continues to develop the flirtation between Sugar and Charlotte, featuring another charged scene by a pool. This small but significant moment highlights a character who has repeatedly suggested that romantic entanglements with humans are not advisable, making the tension between them one of the season’s more intriguing side plots.
‘Sugar’ has maintained its weekly release schedule throughout the season, with new episodes debuting every Friday exclusively on Apple TV. Season 2 consists of eight episodes in total, with the season finale currently slated for August 7, 2026, leaving plenty of time for Sugar’s search for Ji and the larger mystery surrounding his own missing sister to unfold further.
