‘Sullivan’s Crossing’ is gearing up for Season 5 with a notable shift behind the scenes. Series creator Roma Roth is stepping down from her role as head writer and showrunner, with Canadian writer and producer Floyd Kane taking over the daily creative reins of the beloved romantic drama.

This change was first reported ahead of the show’s upcoming fifth season, which CTV officially renewed as part of its upfront announcements. While Roth will no longer be involved in the day-to-day operations, she will continue as an executive producer. This transition comes as Roth focuses more on her new CTV drama ‘Thunder Point,’ another project inspired by the works of bestselling author Robyn Carr.

Floyd Kane, now serving as Head Writer, is recognized for creating the CBC legal drama ‘Diggstown.’ This series made history as the first Canadian legal drama to feature a Black female lead and successfully ran for four seasons. Kane has also contributed as an executive producer on projects like the TV movie ‘Recipe for Romance’ and the thriller series ‘The Ridge.’

Production for ‘Sullivan’s Crossing’ Season 5 is anticipated to commence later this summer in Nova Scotia. Morgan Kohan and Chad Michael Murray are confirmed to return as the leading stars. However, reports indicate that there are currently no plans for Scott Patterson to reprise his role as Sully, a significant character from the first three seasons.

Patterson departed the series after Season 3, and while there were discussions about a potential return for Season 5, both he and Roth later addressed the situation, revealing some behind-the-scenes disagreements. Patterson explained his decision by stating, “The creative differences were becoming untenable and I just sadly realized that the show was not something that I could agree to continue.”

Despite the reported tensions behind the scenes, ‘Sullivan’s Crossing’ has maintained strong viewership. The series continues to be one of The CW’s most-watched shows in the U.S. and has also gained popularity on Netflix, attracting a robust international audience.

Season 4 recently concluded airing on The CW on June 22 and became available on Netflix on June 30. The new episodes quickly gained traction, landing in the top three TV shows on Netflix’s daily U.S. rankings. According to streaming data, Season 4 also made its mark on Netflix’s global English TV chart, debuting at No. 6 during its first week and garnering around 3 million views despite being limited to the U.S. audience.

While Roth is stepping back from the showrunner role, her influence is expected to continue shaping the series. She has been involved in two successful adaptations of Robyn Carr’s novels, including ‘Sullivan’s Crossing’ and Netflix’s hit series ‘Virgin River,’ which has already been renewed for an eighth season.

Season 5 will pick up the story following the dramatic events of the previous season. In Season 4, Maggie Sullivan, portrayed by Morgan Kohan, focused on rebuilding her life and strengthening her relationship with Cal, played by Chad Michael Murray. However, the return of her ex-husband Liam introduced new complications, leaving Cal uncertain about Maggie’s ability to move on from her past.

The season concluded with a significant cliffhanger involving Maggie and Cal, setting the stage for a new storyline in Season 5. With a fresh creative leader at the helm and the main cast returning, the next chapter of ‘Sullivan’s Crossing’ is poised to deliver more romance, drama, and emotional challenges for its characters.
