‘Supergirl’ Box Office Tracking Raises Concerns for DC Studios Amid Mixed Reviews
As the second theatrical release in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s revamped DC Universe gears up for its opening weekend, ‘Supergirl’ is sparking both anxious discussions about box office tracking and excitement for the film itself.
Current projections estimate a domestic opening weekend in the range of $55 to $60 million, along with $10 million from previews. The film could potentially reach a total theatrical run of $300 million or more, against a reported budget of $175 million.
The domestic break-even point for the film is estimated at around $315 million globally, which is more attainable than the typical industry standard of 2.5 times the production budget, which would suggest a figure closer to $437 million. This distinction is crucial in understanding the actual pressure the film faces as it approaches its opening weekend.
The production underwent a rigorous post-production process, with the film being screened for test audiences over ten times, and three different composers brought in and replaced at various stages. The final runtime was trimmed by about 25 minutes from an earlier cut that ran two hours and five minutes. The outcome is a film that has been significantly influenced by audience feedback before its public release.
One of the biggest challenges for the film may not be its marketing but rather its release timing. ‘Toy Story 5’ is set to debut just one week before ‘Supergirl,’ and with franchise sequels typically performing well in their second weekends, ‘Supergirl’ could face the risk of being outperformed in its opening frame by a film that is already a week into its run.
Directed by Craig Gillespie, the ‘Supergirl’ film stars Milly Alcock, who reprises her role as Kara Zor-El following her appearance in last year’s ‘Superman.’ Jason Momoa also features as Lobo, with the latest trailer emphasizing his antihero role alongside Alcock’s cosmic journey.
Initial reactions from critics have been mixed. While Alcock has received near-universal acclaim for her performance, critics are divided on the film overall, with recurring concerns about a lackluster villain mentioned in early reviews ahead of the full embargo lift.
Milly Alcock is confirmed to return as Kara Zor-El in ‘Superman: Man of Tomorrow,’ Gunn’s planned sequel for 2027, indicating that DC Studios is committed to the character’s future, regardless of how this opening weekend unfolds. For a studio with a long-term vision, that may be the most reassuring statistic of all.
