‘Supergirl’ is set to hit theaters soon, but early reactions from critics indicate that DC Studios’ latest superhero film is already sparking discussions. While numerous reviewers commend Milly Alcock’s portrayal of Kara Zor-El and Jason Momoa’s Lobo, others feel the film falls short of its potential.

Directed by Craig Gillespie, ‘Supergirl’ features Alcock as the new DC Universe version of the beloved hero. The film follows Alcock’s appearance in last summer’s ‘Superman’ and also stars Jason Momoa as Lobo, with David Corenswet reprising his role as Superman.

The first reactions surfaced online ahead of the movie’s June 26 release, showcasing a spectrum of opinions from strong praise to mixed reviews.

Chris Killian from ComicBook.com was among those who enjoyed the film, describing it as a unique blend of genres. He likened the movie to several popular titles, stating, “if you threw [Guardians of the Galaxy], True Grit, and Mad Max into a DC blender, you’d get ‘Supergirl’ — a grimy, funny, yet surprisingly somber space adventure.”

Killian also praised Alcock’s performance, particularly when the film delves into Kara’s emotional backstory. He highlighted Momoa’s portrayal of Lobo, noting that the actor seems to be “having the fraggin’ time of his life.”

The critic also commended the film’s practical effects and Corenswet’s return as Superman. According to Killian, Corenswet continues to be the right choice for the role, calling him “peak casting” and stating that viewers “can’t help but smile” whenever he appears.

However, not all critics were fully convinced by the film. Tessa Smith shared a more nuanced reaction, labeling ‘Supergirl’ a “mixed bag.” She explained that her enthusiasm as a comic book fan may have led to heightened expectations.

“As a fan of the comic, I was (perhaps) overly excited for the film adaptation. While Jason Momoa’s Lobo & Milly Alcock shine, some adaptation choices and a bland villain keep it from greatness. It’s, simply put, just fine,” Smith wrote.

Erik Davis also offered positive remarks about the movie’s style and themes. He compared it to the adventurous energy of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ mixed with the harshness of ‘Mad Max.’ Davis praised Alcock’s performance, noting that she adds emotional depth to Kara by portraying both confidence and sadness.

He also appreciated Momoa’s Lobo, stating that the character appears enough to be enjoyable while still leaving audiences wanting more. Davis concurred that Corenswet continues to be an excellent Superman.

Other critics were less impressed. John Nguyen from Nerd Reactor remarked that the film felt underwhelming, suggesting that ‘Supergirl’ needed stronger material to fully showcase what the character could achieve.

Meanwhile, Germain Lussier found the film to be highly enjoyable but noted that it did not have the same impact as ‘Superman.’ Still, he praised the emotional moments and the stronger relationships between its characters.

Total Film’s Fay Watson provided one of the most enthusiastic reactions, declaring ‘Supergirl’ the kind of superhero film she wished she had seen as a teenager. She lauded Alcock’s performance and Craig Gillespie’s direction, emphasizing the film’s strong ‘Mad Max’ influences while still establishing its own identity.

In summary, early reviews indicate that ‘Supergirl’ has numerous strengths, particularly its cast and emotional narrative. However, some critics feel that the villain and certain story decisions hinder it from achieving greatness. Audiences will have the opportunity to form their own opinions when ‘Supergirl’ premieres in theaters on June 26.
