‘Supergirl’ Hints at Major Villain Connection to Brainiac in ‘Man of Tomorrow’
DC Studios is generating significant excitement for its upcoming film ‘Supergirl’, with the promotional campaign now in full effect.
The studio has unveiled final trailers and TV spots for the movie, while new advertising collaborations are revealing intriguing details that may tie directly into the broader DC Universe narrative.
A recent partnership with Ulta Beauty has caught the attention of fans due to a subtle detail in the advertisement. In the promo, actress Milly Alcock, portraying Supergirl, is seen wearing a shirt that says “Kandor City.” Although it may seem like a simple design choice, fans speculate it holds a deeper significance linked to the character’s comic book origins.
In the DC Comics universe, Kandor is closely associated with Brainiac, one of Superman’s most formidable foes. Brainiac is often depicted as an advanced android or cybernetic intelligence that traverses the cosmos, collecting cities and civilizations. His aim is to shrink and preserve entire cultures as part of his personal “collection,” which he views as a universal archive of knowledge.
One of the most recognized iterations of this narrative explains that Kandor, a Kryptonian city, was captured by Brainiac and stored within a bottle-like container. This storyline has appeared in various versions of DC continuity over the years, including significant comic arcs that have shaped the modern mythology of Superman and Supergirl.
Consequently, the reference to “Kandor City” in the ‘Supergirl’ marketing has led fans to speculate that Brainiac may play a pivotal role in the film’s plot or in the overarching DC Universe strategy. It also raises intriguing questions about how Supergirl’s backstory will be reimagined for this new cinematic universe.
Supergirl has multiple origins in the comics. In some versions, she hails from Argo City, a surviving Kryptonian settlement that was shielded after Krypton’s destruction. In other narratives, Kandor is central to her history, particularly when Brainiac is involved. The DC Universe may potentially merge both concepts into a cohesive storyline.
If Kandor is indeed part of the new DCU narrative, it could also have direct ties to ‘Superman: Man of Tomorrow’. Some reports indicate that the forthcoming Superman sequel might feature Brainiac as a significant antagonist. In comic book arcs like ‘Superman: Brainiac’ by Geoff Johns, Brainiac’s acquisition of Kandor plays a crucial role in his conflict with both Superman and Supergirl.
In these narratives, Superman and Supergirl frequently collaborate to thwart Brainiac and rescue what remains of Krypton’s people. This has sparked speculation that the DCU films may be setting the stage for a shared storyline where both heroes confront Brainiac across multiple films.
‘Supergirl’ is currently slated for release in theaters on June 26. As the marketing campaign continues to unveil new hints and details, fans are eagerly watching for any indications of how the film will connect to Superman and the future of the DC Universe.
