‘Supergirl’ International Debut Tracking Low Amidst DCU Challenges

When DC Studios kicked off its revamped DC Universe with last year’s ‘Superman’, it sparked optimism that James Gunn and Peter Safran had found the secret to a successful franchise.

The film debuted with $125 million domestically, grossed over $618 million globally, and provided both critics and audiences with something to support. However, the arrival of ‘Supergirl’ in theaters on June 26 presents a more complicated narrative before any tickets are sold.

This film boasts a strong pedigree, directed by Craig Gillespie and penned by Ana Nogueira. It features Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El, alongside Matthias Schoenaerts, Eve Ridley, David Krumholtz, Emily Beecham, David Corenswet, and Jason Momoa, with production led by Gunn and Safran of DC Studios.

The plot adapts Tom King and Bilquis Evely’s celebrated comic series, taking Kara on a cosmic journey of vengeance and justice, designed to feel unique compared to her cousin’s Earth-bound adventures.

However, the pre-release outlook has been increasingly concerning. According to the Global Box Office, international pre-sales are particularly troubling, with ‘Supergirl’ projected to earn between $27 and $39 million overseas this opening weekend. This suggests a total global opening in the range of $80 to $90 million, which would significantly underperform against the film’s financial requirements.

With a budget of $175 million, the film needs to reach around $437 million globally to break even. Even if the domestic opening lands in the optimistic $40 million range, achieving that break-even point would require exceptional performance in a summer filled with competition. ‘Toy Story 5’ has already surpassed $200 million domestically within its first week and is expected to earn over $80 million in its second weekend, while Illumination’s ‘Minions and Monsters’ is set to debut just days after ‘Supergirl’.

The tracking data reflects a clear downward trend. Initial pre-sale estimates suggested a domestic opening weekend of $55 to $60 million, but many industry analysts have since revised their predictions, settling around the $50 million mark. This decline in audience interest has become a focal point of the summer box office narrative.

Critical reception has landed in a frustrating middle ground, often leading to weak word-of-mouth. Currently, the film holds a score of 58 percent on Rotten Tomatoes and 49 on Metacritic. Many reviews echo a similar sentiment: while Alcock’s performance is universally praised, the film itself struggles to provide her with the material she deserves.

One review notes that the film suffers from a lack of direction in building a narrative around its iconic heroine. It points out that while director Craig Gillespie’s previous works are known for their energy, ‘Supergirl’ fails to exceed expectations, delivering action sequences that feel obligatory rather than confident. This critique is particularly painful given the film’s rich source material and Alcock’s strong performance.

Regardless of the opening weekend results, Milly Alcock’s portrayal seems to align with DC Studios’ expectations. In an interview with Forbes, Alcock shared her struggles with imposter syndrome after being cast, stating, “I thought, what have I done? I really struggled to believe I could do it. I even called the director, saying, I don’t know how to be that person. I’m just me.” The positive response from both audiences and critics indicates that despite the film’s structural issues, the foundation for this character in the DCU remains strong.

As the opening weekend approaches, the key question is whether Alcock’s performance and the film’s ambitious narrative can generate enough repeat business and organic word-of-mouth to thrive in a competitive marketplace. While the DCU can withstand one uneven sequel, ‘Supergirl’ is anticipated to lose the top spot to ‘Toy Story 5’ in its second weekend, intensifying discussions about the franchise’s international appeal.
