The reported salary of Milly Alcock for her role as Supergirl has been disclosed as the DC film faces challenges at the box office.

As per Variety, the ‘House of the Dragon’ star earned approximately $400,000 for portraying Kara Zor-El in her first significant movie role. The report also mentions that she would have received a modest box office bonus had the film performed well in theaters.

This reported salary has ignited discussions online, particularly since ‘Supergirl’ is anticipated to incur substantial losses during its theatrical run. Variety notes that Warner Bros. invested about $170 million in production, alongside an additional $120 million for marketing. After debuting with around $38 million in North America and $68 million globally, the film is now expected to conclude with approximately $200 million to $210 million worldwide.

Despite these disappointing figures, Variety highlights that Alcock’s salary is significantly lower than what established Hollywood stars typically earn for leading roles in blockbuster films. Sources close to the production revealed that ‘Supergirl’ did not offer major backend deals for its cast or creative team, meaning actors were not guaranteed a share of the film’s box office revenue until the studio recouped its expenses.

Variety elaborated that this contrasts with major stars like Joaquin Phoenix or Lady Gaga, who have secured first-dollar gross deals on certain projects. Such agreements allow actors to earn a portion of ticket sales in addition to their upfront salary. Alcock, as a newcomer taking the lead in her first blockbuster, reportedly did not have this type of contract.

The actress gained widespread recognition after her role in HBO’s ‘House of the Dragon’, but ‘Supergirl’ represents her most significant film role to date. She was selected to lead the new DC film following a brief introduction as Kara Zor-El in ‘Superman’, which initiated the rebooted DC Universe under James Gunn and Peter Safran.

While ‘Supergirl’ has faced financial hurdles, DC Studios remains committed to its long-term vision. In a statement to The New York Times, Peter Safran remarked, “While ‘Supergirl’ didn’t meet our box office expectations, it’s just one component of a broader, long-term strategy at DC Studios that we remain confident in.”

Box office analysts suggest that the film’s performance underscores the difficulties of launching projects centered on lesser-known comic book characters. Jeff Bock of Exhibitor Relations told Variety, “This was always going to be a tough hurdle for DC and Warner Bros. because Supergirl isn’t a character that has ever created an event-level blockbuster.” He added, “This is just a case of the film wasn’t good enough to become an event.”

According to Variety, ‘Supergirl’ could face losses between $80 million and $120 million depending on its final global box office total. Nevertheless, industry experts believe that the reported salary indicates Warner Bros. aimed to keep costs down by casting a rising actress instead of an established A-list star.

Although the movie’s financial outcomes have been underwhelming, Alcock’s reported $400,000 salary reflects her increasing prominence in Hollywood. With several major projects on the horizon, many anticipate that the actress’s earning potential will rise significantly in the coming years.
