The second chapter of James Gunn’s revamped DC Universe is on the horizon, and the buzz surrounding ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’ is intensifying daily. Following the successful launch of ‘Superman,’ all eyes are now on Milly Alcock’s portrayal of Kara Zor-El to see if the momentum can continue into this next feature.

Directed by Craig Gillespie and based on the acclaimed graphic novel by Tom King and Bilquis Evely, the film takes a unique turn from the traditional DCU style. Instead of a typical Earth-bound superhero narrative, it immerses Supergirl in a cosmic revenge story, partnering her with Ruthye, a young alien girl on a quest for justice after her father’s murder. This darker and more unconventional premise presents a fresh take for a DC blockbuster, and the marketing has been working diligently to convey this to a broader audience.

That marketing effort seems to be yielding results. Pre-sales for ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’ are tracking impressively, with industry analysts predicting a domestic opening between $60 million and $75 million, as highlighted in a widely shared screenshot from Global Box Office. Initial forecasts had estimated a domestic opening of $55 million or more, with pre-sale comparisons showing it at 65% of ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ first six hours of sales and 92% of ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,’ which debuted with $106.1 million.

The significance of these pre-sales is heightened by the unusual timing of ticket availability. With tickets going on sale just three weeks before the release, this is considered late for a major superhero film. This shorter window means that the early pre-sale figures are being scrutinized closely, as there is less time for organic momentum to build before the opening weekend.

In its first two days, pre-sales were 2.5 times ahead of similar tracking for other female-led superhero films, igniting genuine excitement about whether ‘Supergirl’ can succeed where many post-pandemic comic book films featuring women have faltered. This potential has invigorated segments of the fanbase that were previously skeptical about the project.

Unaided awareness, which measures audience recognition of a film without prompts, is significantly higher than it was for ‘Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu,’ ‘Thunderbolts,’ and ‘Shazam!’ This is a crucial indicator, as organic awareness often correlates with stronger opening weekend performance among audiences who are not already dedicated fans.

However, the film does face commercial hurdles. Supergirl will compete with family-friendly titles in June and may encounter challenges due to the character’s lesser mainstream recognition compared to other DC heroes. Recently, some tracking services have slightly adjusted their projections downward, with a reported net production cost of $175 million setting the break-even point at approximately $315 million in global box office revenue.

This target is more attainable than many blockbusters face, providing the film with some leeway. Milly Alcock is confirmed to reprise her role as Kara Zor-El in the upcoming sequel ‘Superman: Man of Tomorrow,’ indicating that DC Studios is committed to the character’s future, regardless of the opening weekend’s outcome.

The cast surrounding Alcock is also a significant draw. Jason Momoa appears as Lobo, the DCU antihero, with the latest trailer emphasizing his role, alongside Matthias Schoenaerts as the villain Krem of the Yellow Hills, Eve Ridley as Ruthye, and David Corenswet expected to portray Superman.

The film’s official trailer has amassed 27 million views on YouTube, with the earlier teaser contributing an additional 24 million views, suggesting a genuine curiosity that could translate into ticket sales. Whether the pre-sale momentum continues and accelerates in the final days leading up to the opening will be crucial in determining if ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’ marks a significant success for the new DC era or becomes another cautionary tale.

With the release date just days away, the next key indicator will be the first wave of critic reviews, which could either bolster the current momentum or complicate it significantly.
