Washington Irving’s ‘The Legend of Sleepy Hollow’ has seen numerous adaptations over the years, from Disney’s animated segment featuring a Bing Crosby song to Tim Burton’s gothic detective interpretation starring Johnny Depp.

Now, two centuries after its initial release, the tale of a headless horseman haunting a superstitious schoolteacher is receiving yet another fresh take, this time focusing on a different character.

Sydney Sweeney is set to star in ‘Hollow’, a new film that reimagines Irving’s 1820 short story, which Sony Pictures has officially greenlit. Unlike most adaptations that center around Ichabod Crane, this version shifts the narrative to spotlight a character who has traditionally been seen as merely a prize.

That character is Katrina Van Tassel, the affluent farmer’s daughter caught in a love triangle between Ichabod Crane and Brom Bones in Irving’s original narrative. In this retelling, Van Tassel takes center stage, becoming the focal point of what is described as a thrilling mystery and a captivating supernatural love triangle, rather than being a passive romantic interest.

The film is being developed by Lindsey Anderson Beer, who is adapting her debut novel of the same name for the screen while also directing. Beer, known for her work on 2023’s ‘Pet Sematary: Bloodlines’, is said to be blending gothic elements, psychological intrigue, and erotic thriller aspects into a contemporary, high-concept reimagining of the classic story.

Her novel has already created significant buzz in the industry before its release. Putnam, an imprint of Penguin Random House recognized for launching numerous bestsellers, made a preemptive acquisition to secure the book before it could go to auction, with the story of Katrina Van Tassel set to publish in the fall of 2027.

Margot Robbie’s production company LuckyChap is producing the film alongside Beer through her Brew Lab banner. Sweeney is also on board as a producer through her newly established Honey Trap company, marking its first official film project, with Kaylee McGregor serving as president of production and development.

This isn’t Sweeney’s first venture into horror, following her role in ‘Immaculate’ and a busy schedule that includes a sequel to ‘The Housemaid’ and her upcoming blockbuster debut in a ‘Gundam’ film. Casting for the remaining roles in ‘Hollow’ is reportedly underway, with actors eager to portray Ichabod Crane and Brom Bones.

While no release date has been announced for the film yet, and with the source novel still over a year away from publication, ‘Hollow’ is in the early stages of development. Nevertheless, the concept has already sparked considerable excitement among horror fans eager to see one of literature’s more overlooked heroines finally take the lead in her own narrative.
