Sylvester Stallone Calls Out Orlando Bloom as Not a True Action Hero

Sylvester Stallone has always been vocal about his views on action films, and he made it clear years ago that he did not consider Orlando Bloom to be a genuine action hero.

This remark surfaced while Stallone was promoting his comeback as John Rambo in the 2008 film ‘Rambo’. After a significant hiatus from major action roles, Stallone aimed to remind audiences of what he believed a classic action star embodied. At that time, he observed the new wave of Hollywood actors and felt a stark contrast between them and the action legends of his generation.

“I’m still in my prime, and I look forward to showing fans the real action hero again,” Stallone stated. He then questioned the notion of Bloom being regarded as one of the action genre’s leading figures, adding, “Today’s idea of an action hero is Orlando Bloom. Orlando Bloom? Give me a break.”

Stallone’s comments were certainly blunt, yet many fans pointed out that Bloom was never really marketed as a conventional action hero like Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, or Bruce Willis. Although Bloom starred in numerous major action and fantasy films, his roles typically leaned towards different character types.

In the ‘Lord of the Rings’ trilogy, Bloom portrayed Legolas, the adept elf archer who became one of the franchise’s standout characters. However, this role emphasized fantasy adventure rather than the rugged, physical action style Stallone was famous for.

Bloom also took on the role of Will Turner in the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ series, where he played a romantic lead and a young blacksmith drawn into a world of piracy. In ‘Troy’, he depicted Paris, a character remembered more for his emotional decisions than his combat skills.

One of the rare instances where Bloom ventured closer to a traditional action role was in Ridley Scott’s ‘Kingdom of Heaven’. This historical epic provided him with a more prominent warrior character, but the film received mixed reviews upon its release, with critics focusing more on the performances and narrative rather than labeling Bloom as an action star.

The contrast between Stallone’s definition of an action hero and Bloom’s career trajectory illustrates how much the genre has evolved over the years. Stallone gained fame through physically demanding roles like Rocky Balboa and John Rambo, characters defined by strength, survival, and intense combat.

In contrast, Bloom’s most notable roles were often embedded in fantasy adventures, where action was merely one aspect of a broader narrative. While he managed sword fights and battle scenes, he was not typically recognized as the type of actor who could carry an entire action film on his own.

Years later, Bloom appeared in the 2024 action thriller ‘Red Right Hand’, but by that time, Stallone’s stance had already been established. For Stallone, being an action hero transcends merely participating in fight scenes; it encompasses having the presence, toughness, and reputation that defined the stars of the genre’s golden age.

Whether fans align with Stallone’s perspective or not, his remarks highlighted his belief that true action heroes are scarce and that the title must be earned through more than just a handful of memorable roles.
