‘Take Charge of My Heart’ Is Based on the Web Novel ‘Charge Me Up’
Netflix’s latest Korean romantic comedy presents a premise that seems almost too bizarre to be true. A powerful chaebol heir possesses an artificial heart that is running low on battery, and the only person capable of recharging it is a woman who exudes electricity. If you’re curious about the origins of this unique concept, it actually stems from a web novel rather than a traditional writers’ room.
According to Netflix, the source material is the Naver web novel ‘Charge Me Up’ by Haebeon. This means that ‘Take Charge of My Heart’ comes with an established fanbase, which helps explain why the show confidently embraces its eccentric premise.
The series is adapted from a popular web novel of the same name. The original Korean title translates to a plea for charging, and the source material is authored by Hae Boon. Initially titled ‘Recharge Me,’ the show ultimately adopted its current name, which emphasizes the romantic aspect while still hinting at the electric metaphor.
Web novel adaptations have become a reliable source for Korean dramas, and this one fits the mold perfectly. With a high-concept story that has already captivated readers, Netflix has a head start in appealing to an international audience, especially since the premise can be summarized in a single sentence.
Directed by Park Su-won and written by Song Yu-chae, the production is handled by NEW POINT and WHYNOT MEDIA. Park is known for his work on ‘Work Later, Drink Now’ Season 2 and ‘Birthcare Center,’ showcasing his knack for sharp, character-driven humor.
This marks Park’s first foray into romantic comedy, transitioning from workplace and family humor to a full-fledged romance. It will be intriguing to see how his comedic instincts mesh with such a fantastical storyline.
Filming began in July of last year, and all ten episodes will be available for binge-watching starting October 9, just in time for the autumn season.
The lead roles are played by Kim Young Kwang and Chae Soo Bin. Kim portrays Baek Ho Rang, a third-generation chaebol heir managing a resort for one of the nation’s top conglomerates. Despite his polished exterior, he harbors a secret: an artificial heart that adds depth to his character.

Chae Soo Bin plays Na Bo Bae, a screenwriter racing against time to complete a romance screenplay before her contract expires. There’s an ironic twist as she finds herself entangled in a love story of her own. Both actors are familiar faces to Netflix viewers, with Chae known for ‘When the Phone Rings’ and ‘The Fabulous,’ while Kim has appeared in ‘Trigger’ and ‘On Your Wedding Day.’
Netflix highlights that both actors are making a return to the romantic comedy genre, promising sparks for fans of Korean romance.
The story begins with a chance encounter that turns electric—literally. An accidental kiss and a subsequent hospital meeting reveal that her touch can recharge his artificial heart. The teaser showcases Bo Bae, whose life has been chaotic due to her electrical powers, meeting a man who is immune to electricity.
The central premise kicks the romantic comedy into high gear. Ho Rang needs her to keep his heart functioning for three months until he can undergo another surgery, which he desires to take control of TS Group. In exchange for her help, he agrees to help her fulfill her romance bucket list.
This setup creates a classic contract relationship infused with superhero-style elements, as depicted in the promotional poster. Bo Bae is illustrated with pink electric currents surrounding her, while Ho Rang maintains a stoic expression beside her. The question remains whether this artificial arrangement can withstand genuine emotions, prompting viewers to ponder whether they prefer a love story with a ticking clock on his heart or one where the spark was never meant to be contained.
