Taylor Sheridan’s ‘Dutton Ranch’ spin-off is transforming one of the most iconic roles from the ‘Yellowstone’ universe: Rip Wheeler, originally portrayed by Cole Hauser. Instead of introducing a single new character to take on Rip’s responsibilities, the series has opted to divide his former duties between two distinct individuals.

Rip Wheeler has always been a pivotal character in ‘Yellowstone.’ He serves as John Dutton’s loyal enforcer, ranch foreman, and son-in-law, adeptly handling violent issues with discretion. His unique position within the narrative made the prospect of replacing him a challenging task.

In ‘Dutton Ranch,’ the role is not assigned to just one person. Instead, it is shared between Azul, played by J.R. Villarreal, and Chet, portrayed by Hart Denton. The show presents them as two separate interpretations of what Rip once embodied, rather than a straightforward replacement.

Azul takes on the more conventional ranch-hand responsibilities, showcasing his understanding of the daily operations and physical demands of ranch life. Conversely, Chet introduces a more dangerous element, characterized as someone unafraid to cross boundaries when necessary, embodying the darker aspects of ranch existence.

Rip remains part of the narrative, but his role has evolved. He now leads the 10-Petal ranch operation, while Azul and Zachariah, played by Marc Menchaca, oversee the Dutton Ranch. Zachariah is depicted as having a tough past, equipped with the experience to navigate morally ambiguous situations, reminiscent of characters throughout Sheridan’s storytelling.

This shift in roles coincides with a significant change in setting for Beth and Rip. Following the events of ‘Yellowstone,’ the couple leaves Montana and moves to Texas, where they acquire the Edwards Ranch in Rio Paloma, aiming to forge a new life away from their past troubles. However, it quickly becomes evident that their fresh start is anything but tranquil.

The official synopsis for ‘Dutton Ranch’ outlines this new chapter: “As Beth and Rip fight to build a future together — far from the ghosts of Yellowstone — they collide with brutal new realities and a ruthless rival ranch that will stop at nothing to protect its empire. In South Texas, blood runs deeper, forgiveness is fleeting, and the cost of survival might just be your soul.”

The cast features Kelly Reilly as Beth Dutton and Cole Hauser returning as Rip Wheeler, alongside Finn Little as Carter. The series also introduces new and returning talents such as Juan Pablo Raba, Annette Bening, Jai Courtney, J.R. Villarreal, and Hart Denton, each contributing to the expanded narrative that builds on the original ‘Yellowstone’ foundation.

Created by Chad Feehan and executive produced by Taylor Sheridan, ‘Dutton Ranch’ continues to air on Paramount Network and stream on Paramount+, further expanding the Yellowstone universe while redefining familiar roles in a fresh context.
