‘Ted Lasso‘ Season 4 has taken a turn into a much more chaotic version of AFC Richmond than fans might recall, with personal issues resurfacing for the characters in unexpected ways. This is especially true for Coach Beard, whose home life has become just as tumultuous as the events on the pitch.

As the season begins, Beard’s marriage has already fallen apart, and three years have elapsed since he last saw Ted, who returned to Kansas during that time. Working under Roy Kent on the men’s side of the club has left Beard looking worse for wear, and Episode 2 highlights that the fallout from his marriage is something he hasn’t easily moved past.

This turmoil catches up with him dramatically in Episode 4, when a visit to the urinal at the Crown & Anchor brings him face to face with a poster for ‘What Ever Happened to the Baby, Jane?,’ a one-woman fringe show created and performed by his ex-wife. The poster suggests that the baby she claimed to be expecting during their wedding at Stonehenge may have never existed.

To make matters worse, the artwork indicates that Jane has transformed their marital breakdown into performance art, complete with her appearance resembling Beard himself, a detail first hinted at in the Season 4 trailer.

Brendan Hunt, the series co-creator and actor who plays Beard, discussed the extent of Beard’s struggles during the Season 4 press junket. In an interview with TVLine, Hunt warned that Beard has faced some unpleasant changes since fans last saw him, humorously noting that a bad Instagram post pales in comparison to what he will endure.

Beard cannot simply ignore the show and move on; according to Hunt, he feels compelled to attend the performance in Episode 5, turning the experience into an awkward, cringe-worthy event for him and those around him.

Hunt also shared insights into how much of Beard’s distress is linked to Jane versus the absence of his best friend. He indicated that Jane’s impact is more significant, although Ted’s absence contributes to his struggles, especially since having Roy as a boss allowed Beard to unravel without anyone questioning his disheveled state.

Fans have begun reacting online, with clips and posts circulating ahead of the episode’s wider release, many expressing secondhand embarrassment for Beard and sympathy for what he is about to experience. The blend of dark comedy and genuine heartbreak aligns well with a season that is embracing messier, more grounded narratives for its returning characters.

In Season 4, Ted returns to Richmond to tackle a new challenge: coaching a second-division women’s football team. Jason Sudeikis, Hannah Waddingham, Brett Goldstein, and Hunt all reprise their roles, joined by new cast members like Tanya Reynolds and Grant Feely. Beard’s storyline with Jane stands out as one of the season’s more surprising personal arcs, blending the classic heart of ‘Ted Lasso’ with something decidedly stranger and more uncomfortable.

Ted Lasso EP Brendan Hunt On Coach Beard’s Post-Jane Spiral has already provided fans with plenty to ponder ahead of Episode 4, and it’s evident that Beard’s worst nightmare is just beginning.
