‘Ted Lasso’ Season 5 Update Apple TV Hints at Future After Season 4 Premiere
Fans of ‘Ted Lasso’ have a reason to feel optimistic about the show’s future. Even before the arrival of season 4, Apple TV executive Matt Cherniss has provided a promising update that suggests the beloved comedy series could extend beyond its upcoming return.
The fate of ‘Ted Lasso’ seemed uncertain after season 3, which many fans believed would mark the end of the Emmy-winning series. However, Apple TV later confirmed season 4, which will take the narrative in a new direction as Ted Lasso faces a fresh coaching challenge with a women’s soccer team.
Jason Sudeikis will reprise his role as Ted Lasso and remains deeply involved behind the scenes as a co-creator, showrunner, head writer, and executive producer. The new season will also see the return of several familiar faces, including Hannah Waddingham, Juno Temple, Brett Goldstein, Brendan Hunt, and Jeremy Swift.
In an interview with Deadline, Cherniss discussed the series’ future and provided fans with an encouraging update regarding the potential for season 5. He mentioned that Sudeikis is already contemplating what could come next, although Apple TV has yet to officially renew the show for another season.
“Jason [Sudeikis is] still hard at work on season four, and I know he’s looking to jump into the next season soon, but to my knowledge, I don’t think we’ve gotten started on it yet,” Cherniss stated.
While this comment does not confirm that season 5 is officially in the works, it does indicate that discussions about continuing the series are already underway. Apple TV appears to have confidence in the franchise’s future and views ‘Ted Lasso’ as one of its premier comedy brands.
Cherniss also spoke about the company’s upcoming lineup and expressed enthusiasm about having ‘Ted Lasso’ back in the awards conversation. He emphasized that Apple TV strongly believes in its comedy lineup and the audience’s positive response to its shows.

“It’s great, I feel like we have the best comedy brand in the business, and to be able to go from a season with Shrinking and Widow’s Bay and Margot’s Got Money Troubles to next year with Ted Lasso and The Studio coming back. We’re in a really good place as a service,” Cherniss added.
The upcoming fourth season will introduce a significant change for Ted. Instead of coaching AFC Richmond, he will now lead a second division women’s football team. According to the official season synopsis, Ted and the new team will learn to embrace risks and challenges they never anticipated.
This new storyline could pave the way for a longer narrative arc. If season 5 comes to fruition, the series may continue to delve into the women’s team in a manner similar to how the first three seasons followed AFC Richmond.
Along with the returning cast, season 4 will introduce several new actors, including Tanya Reynolds, Jude Mack, Faye Marsay, Rex Hayes, Aisling Sharkey, Abbie Hern, and Grant Feely. Many of these newcomers will portray members of Ted’s new football team.
For now, fans must wait for season 4 to premiere before discovering the next chapter of the story. However, with Apple TV’s confidence and Sudeikis reportedly already looking ahead, the prospect of ‘Ted Lasso’ season 5 seems more plausible than ever.
‘Ted Lasso’ season 4 premieres August 5 on Apple TV.
