Viral videos showcasing mysterious creatures in the sky often dominate social media, and this week’s dragon sighting over the UK was no different. Clips featuring a large winged silhouette gliding against the sunset quickly circulated, leaving many viewers puzzled about what they were witnessing.

However, the confusion was short-lived as more context emerged. Instead of an unexplained phenomenon, the footage was revealed to be part of an elaborate promotional stunt, perfectly timed with a significant real-world event occurring in the same city.

Residents were left bewildered after a giant dragon was spotted flying over Glasgow, but the mystery has since been unraveled. The animatronic creature is Syrax, the dragon from the ‘House of the Dragon’ series, which was flown over the OVO Hydro Arena and SEC Armadillo to promote the show’s third season while also celebrating the launch of the 2026 Commonwealth Games, which kicked off in Glasgow on July 23.

This isn’t the first time the flying dragon has graced the skies to promote the show. The same model previously soared 400 feet above the Tower of London in June, marking what organizers called the largest object ever to fly over the historic site.

Constructed by the German aeronautics firm Airstage, the model features an impressive 25-foot wingspan and weighs 13 kilograms. It is made from vacuum-formed Depron foam wrapped around a carbon fiber and aluminum skeleton, finished with hand airbrushed paint. The London flight alone required a 14-member team three months and nearly 3,000 hours to build.

The engineering behind this stunt goes beyond just a stunning visual. The model is equipped with 23 moving mechanical parts for lifelike movement, along with 13 impellers in its legs to keep it airborne, allowing it to authentically mimic the flight patterns viewers expect from the show’s dragons.

Airstage’s chief operating officer described the London flight as one of the most intricate flying models the team has ever created, noting that the crew conducted over seven test flights to refine the dragon’s movements until they closely matched what audiences see on screen. This attention to detail clearly resonated, as many people mistook the footage for something genuinely unexplained.

The London flight also featured a celebratory event on the ground, with a special evening reception held after the display, attended by ‘House of the Dragon’ cast members including Kieran Bew, Tom Bennett, Clinton Liberty, and Abubakar Salim. This kind of coordinated promotional effort indicates that HBO Max is heavily investing in unconventional marketing strategies ahead of the show’s third season.

With the Commonwealth Games now officially underway in Glasgow and ‘House of the Dragon’ Season 3 generating excitement through stunts like this one, it’s evident that the dragon sightings perplexing social media users were no coincidence. The effectiveness of the footage’s viral spread without context shows that this guerrilla marketing approach has indeed paid off for the show.
