‘The Boys’ continues to lead the way on Prime Video, even as fans express mixed feelings about the direction of its final season. Despite ongoing debates regarding pacing and narrative choices, the show is attracting substantial global viewership ahead of its series finale.

According to Prime Video, the fifth season of ‘The Boys’ has garnered approximately 57 million viewers per episode worldwide after five weeks of data collection. This achievement marks the strongest performance in the show’s history, based on the standard metric of viewers who watch at least a few minutes of an episode.

Additionally, this season ranks among the Top 10 most-watched seasons of any original series on Prime Video and has driven the largest three-week viewing surge the platform has experienced from any title.

These impressive numbers come at a time when some viewers have voiced their criticisms online regarding the season’s structure. Comparisons have been made to other controversial TV finales, such as ‘Game of Thrones,’ with some fans suggesting that certain episodes feel slower and contain what they label as “filler” content leading up to the conclusion.

Showrunner Eric Kripke addressed the disparity between online feedback and actual viewing figures in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. He mentioned that while reading online criticism can initially feel overwhelming, the official ratings provide a clearer perspective.

He explained, “I’ve gone through a journey when I first started to read everything — like on social media or online — and it starts to feel like that’s the whole universe, and it feels scary, and you have a pit in your stomach. So then [you see the ratings and] you’re like, ‘Oh, obviously, how many times do I have to relearn the lesson that the online world is not the actual world?’”

Kripke emphasized that online reactions often stem from a vocal but limited segment of viewers, which may not accurately represent the broader audience. The real-world numbers have helped alleviate his concerns regarding the backlash.

He also discussed the challenges of writing for a large ensemble cast, noting that the final season needed to balance multiple character arcs. With over a dozen major characters, Kripke stated that the writers aimed to ensure each character received meaningful development rather than simply filling episodes with action.

He told TV Guide, “None of the things that happen in the last few episodes will matter if you don’t flesh out the characters. I’m getting a lot of online dissatisfaction, to put it politely. And I’m like, ‘What are you expecting? Are you expecting a huge battle scene every episode?’”

Kripke reiterated that the creative team never viewed any episode as “filler,” but rather as part of a larger effort to build emotional depth and complete each character’s narrative.

The fifth season is set to conclude with a finale that runs just over an hour, wrapping up the main storyline of ‘The Boys.’ The series has also laid the groundwork for future projects within the same universe, including the upcoming prequel ‘Vought Rising,’ which is anticipated to premiere next year.
