‘The Devil Wears Prada’ Star Anne Hathaway Discusses Longtime Health Issue Impacting Vision
Anne Hathaway has shared details about a private health challenge she faced for years before seeking treatment.
This revelation came during her appearance on The New York Times podcast “Popcast,” where the actress candidly discussed her struggles with an eye condition throughout her 30s. Hathaway revealed that she dealt with significant vision issues for an extended period before undergoing surgery that ultimately corrected the problem.
In the conversation, she explained how the condition affected her daily life more than most people realized. She reached a point where she experienced major vision loss in one eye.
“This is maybe too much information,” Hathaway admitted. “I was half blind for 10 years.”
She elaborated that the issue stemmed from an early-onset cataract, which clouds the lens of the eye and results in blurry or unclear vision. Over time, her sight in her left eye diminished to the extent that she described herself as legally blind on that side.
“It impacted my vision so much that I was basically legally blind out of my left eye and I wound up getting surgery,” she explained. “And I didn’t realize how bad it had gotten until I could finally see the full spectrum.”
Hathaway noted that she only grasped the severity of her condition after the surgery restored her vision. Prior to that, she had adapted to living with limited sight without fully understanding the toll it took on her body and stress levels.
“I’ve calmed down since then,” she shared. “I didn’t realize it was actually taxing my nervous system.”
According to information from the Mayo Clinic, cataracts occur when the lens of the eye becomes cloudy, making everyday tasks like reading, driving at night, or recognizing facial expressions more challenging. In Hathaway’s case, the condition persisted for years before she received treatment.
She also expressed her gratitude for her restored vision, emphasizing that she no longer takes it for granted.
“I appreciate vision because I literally feel like every day, I wake up and I get to see the way that I do, it’s a miracle,” she said. “I actually am like, ‘Oh, two generations back, that wouldn’t have been an option for someone like me.’ So, I actually do feel very connected to that kind of a miracle.”
The interview also addressed another issue Hathaway has faced recently: online speculation regarding her appearance. She responded to rumors about cosmetic procedures, stating that she typically prefers to keep personal matters private but felt compelled to speak out as the discussion became too overwhelming.
Her comments highlight a broader issue affecting many public figures, where online assumptions can spread rapidly and lead to widespread speculation.
“We’re at a time when people feel very confident in assuming what they think is fact, and sometimes what they think is accurate and sometimes it’s not,” she remarked. “The speculation has gotten so loud that you do feel the need to just get your truth out there.”
Hathaway added that she still questions whether speaking out was the right choice, but she wanted to prevent the conversation from distracting from her work.
Her revelation adds a personal dimension to her career narrative, revealing a time in her life when she quietly managed a serious medical condition while continuing her work in Hollywood.
