Premiere nights often transform into a spectacle of their own, especially when the cast navigates both tabloid rumors and the promotion of their show. This was certainly true at the recent London premiere for Guy Ritchie’s Netflix crime drama, which returned for its eagerly awaited second season.

‘The Gentlemen’ has spent the last two years establishing itself as a unique blend of aristocratic intrigue and the chaos of the criminal underworld, chronicling Eddie Horniman’s unexpected journey from a reluctant duke to a powerful crime boss. Season 2 continues this evolution, showcasing Eddie as he confidently leads his criminal empire.

The excitement of the premiere coincided with the show’s streaming debut on Netflix, with the cast walking the red carpet at The Guildhall on September 2. Theo James and Kaya Scodelario led the arrivals, joined by a host of returning cast members and Ritchie himself.

The event followed ongoing speculation regarding Meghan Markle potentially joining ‘The Gentlemen’ in a future season, a rumor that has gained traction in the British media. When asked about the possibility during an interview with Town & Country, James responded humorously, saying, “Yes, Fergie is joining. She’ll be playing my love interest,” before addressing the Markle rumors more seriously.

James remarked, “No, I think that was mainly a lot of hot air. At the moment, we’re just trying to get as many eyes on season two, and then season three will happen soon. But in terms of story, we have the overarching ambition of where we’re going to go,” as reported by Town & Country.

While James’s comments didn’t completely dismiss the rumors, Netflix’s UK scripted boss, Manda Levin, had previously hinted that “all bets are off” regarding future casting. With Season 3 already confirmed following the Edinburgh TV Festival, the potential for casting surprises remains open.

James attended the premiere with his wife, Ruth Kearney, while Scodelario made a striking appearance. Ritchie was also present with his wife, Jacqui Ainsley, and their son, Rocco Ritchie, who is 26 and the son of Madonna.

The premiere also saw appearances from Giancarlo Esposito, Joely Richardson, Ray Winstone, Jasmine Blackborow, and Vinnie Jones, showcasing a significant portion of the returning cast. The timing of the event perfectly aligned with the show’s streaming debut, offering fans both a glamorous red carpet experience and the opportunity to watch the new season.

As reported by Netflix’s Tudum, Season 2 takes Eddie and Susie Glass’s operation beyond England, introducing them to new allies, adversaries, and aristocrats as their criminal enterprise expands. Lead writer and executive producer Matthew Read emphasized the challenge of broadening the ensemble while ensuring each character has space to develop, focusing on “thickening the soup” without losing the show’s core dynamics.

Scodelario also discussed her character’s growth this season, revealing that Susie begins to question her father’s control, seeking a newfound independence as the narrative unfolds. With Season 3 already confirmed and speculation about Meghan Markle still lingering, ‘The Gentlemen’ appears set to broaden its universe beyond this latest premiere.
