‘The Gentlemen’ Season 2 Returns to Netflix but Viewership Numbers Decline
Guy Ritchie established his reputation with stylish crime capers long before entering the streaming arena, and ‘The Gentlemen‘ was intended to showcase that his formula could successfully transition to television. When the series debuted on Netflix in March 2024, it made a significant impact, quickly dominating the platform’s global charts.
After a wait of about two and a half years, fans finally received the much-anticipated second season on September 3, featuring Theo James and Kaya Scodelario as they navigate Eddie and Susie’s increasingly precarious roles within Bobby’s criminal empire. The story picks up one year after the duo joined forces, with Bobby’s questionable decisions now threatening to unravel everything they’ve established.
However, the excitement surrounding the return has met a harsher reality as viewership numbers were revealed. ‘The Gentlemen’ Season 2 garnered 6.7 million views in its initial days on Netflix, marking a significant 45% drop from the 12.2 million views that Season 1 achieved during the same timeframe in 2024.

The decline is not just a one-off statistic. Season 2 also premiered at number 3 on Netflix’s global chart, a noticeable drop from Season 1’s impressive number 1 debut, with total hours viewed decreasing nearly 39%, despite the new season being slightly longer.
This decline occurred even though Netflix seemed to invest more in promoting the new season, including a substantial press push from star Theo James leading up to the release. The show had already secured a third-season renewal before Season 2 premiered, a sign of confidence that now appears somewhat misaligned with the initial numbers.

What makes this drop particularly perplexing is that critical reception has improved. Season 2 achieved an 82% score on Rotten Tomatoes, surpassing Season 1’s 75%, indicating that the show’s quality isn’t the factor driving viewers away.
Some of this disconnect may be attributed to timing. The lengthy gap between seasons seems to have led some viewers to rewatch Season 1 first, which reentered Netflix’s global top 10 the same week Season 2 launched, attracting 3.2 million views as dedicated fans caught up on the storyline.
‘The Gentlemen’ is not alone in experiencing this kind of sophomore slump. ‘Wednesday’ Season 2 faced a 31% drop compared to its first season, while ‘Beef’ Season 2 saw a more drastic 62% decline, and ‘That ’90s Show’ suffered a staggering 79% drop between its two seasons.
This trend highlights a broader challenge for Netflix, where prolonged waits between seasons and an oversaturated release calendar appear to be diminishing the returning audience for shows. Even strong critical acclaim and a familiar cast do not guarantee that all viewers will return for the next installment.
Whether ‘The Gentlemen’ can rebound in its second week, as some analysts have speculated might happen once the distractions of the Labor Day holiday pass, remains uncertain. For now, the show finds itself in a unique position: a well-reviewed sophomore season that still needs to prove it can retain the audience that Season 1 cultivated.
