The DC Universe has been undergoing a significant transformation over the past few years under the leadership of James Gunn and Peter Safran, blending established stars with emerging talent across both film and television.

Fans have witnessed the new shared universe develop through titles like ‘Superman,’ ‘Peacemaker,’ and the latest addition, ‘Supergirl,’ each introducing fresh faces to a cast that is still finding its footing in the commercial landscape.

With each new release, there is growing interest in the earnings of these actors as they don their capes and cowls. Outlets such as Variety and Puck News have begun to shed light on the paychecks of DCU stars, revealing intriguing insights into how the studio is managing talent costs during these early stages of the franchise.

Leading the pay scale is John Cena, whose portrayal of Christopher Smith in ‘Peacemaker’ has reportedly earned him between five hundred thousand and one million dollars per episode.

According to Parade, Cena’s earnings for the eight-episode first season totaled nearly eight million dollars. Even at the lower end of that range, Cena’s television salary far surpasses what most of his DCU film co-stars have received.

This disparity becomes even more pronounced when examining the cast of last year’s ‘Superman.’ Nicholas Hoult, who plays Lex Luthor, was compensated with $2 million for his role, while David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan, portraying Superman and Lois Lane respectively, each received $750,000, as reported by Puck News. This pay gap reflects Hoult’s more established Hollywood career, which includes franchise work in ‘X-Men’ and acclaimed performances in films like ‘The Menu’ and ‘Nosferatu.’

Industry experts have noted that DC Studios seems to prioritize casting rising stars who can grow with the franchise over time, rather than investing heavily in already established A-list actors for these initial projects. This strategy mirrors Marvel’s approach during the early days of its Cinematic Universe, where stars like Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Hemsworth started with relatively modest salaries before their earnings skyrocketed in subsequent films.

This trend is also evident with ‘Supergirl.’ Milly Alcock, who takes on the title role in her first major film lead, reportedly earned around $400,000 for her performance.

A report from Variety mentioned that Alcock would have received a small box office bonus had the film performed well, a deal structure that has become increasingly common for newer DCU stars without established box office records.

This salary figure has sparked discussions online, especially considering the film’s disappointing box office performance. ‘Supergirl’ was produced on a budget of approximately one hundred seventy million dollars, with an additional one hundred twenty million spent on marketing, yet it opened to less than seventy million dollars globally.

Comparisons have already been made to Gal Gadot’s initial payday as Wonder Woman, which also started low before increasing significantly through box office bonuses once the film became a success.

For the rest of the ‘Superman’ ensemble, reported salaries are in a similar range to Alcock’s. Nathan Fillion and Edi Gathegi, who played Guy Gardner and Mister Terrific, respectively, are believed to have earned around $400,000, aligning them with the newer additions to the DCU rather than the higher tier commanded by Hoult.

Not all actors’ salaries have been disclosed yet. Specific earnings for Jason Momoa, Frank Grillo, and Jennifer Holland in their DCU roles remain unknown, leaving fans to speculate based on their levels of fame and previous franchise experience.

What is evident from the reports so far is that DC Studios is treating its early DCU slate similarly to how Marvel approached its formative years, focusing on long-term growth rather than front-loading substantial paychecks for its ensemble cast.

Whether this strategy will persist as these actors become more closely associated with their characters, and as future installments succeed or fail at the box office, is one of the more fascinating financial narratives to follow as the DCU continues to expand.
