Marvel has spent nearly a decade softening one of its most destructive characters, gradually replacing raw fury with calm intellect until Bruce Banner’s two sides merged into a manageable hero. While this evolution made sense for the narrative at the time, it left longtime fans questioning if they would ever witness the character’s uncontrollable side again.

That wait seems to be coming to an end. Mark Ruffalo is set to reprise his role as Bruce Banner in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ marking his first appearance since 2022’s ‘She-Hulk, Attorney at Law.’ This time, the character is shedding the calm, composed Smart Hulk persona that audiences have become accustomed to.

Marvel Studios has now provided its most detailed look yet at this new iteration of the character, showcasing a redesigned Savage Hulk that appears significantly more monstrous and less reminiscent of Ruffalo’s features than any previous version. According to insights from an early look at ‘The Art of Spider-Man Brand New Day,’ this shift away from Ruffalo’s likeness was intentional, aiming to return the character to his more feral roots.

In the film, Banner is introduced as a physics professor at Empire State University, equipped with a gamma inhibitor device on his wrist to maintain his human form. Peter Parker seeks his guidance as he experiences a mysterious mutation, leading Banner into a mentor role that quickly escalates into something far more perilous as his own control begins to wane.

This loss of control is dramatically portrayed in the film’s marketing, with Banner warning in the trailer that if anyone sees him without his inhibitor device, they should run. True to this warning, the device eventually comes off, unleashing the Hulk in a form much closer to his earliest, most destructive MCU appearances than anything audiences have witnessed since 2015’s ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron.’

Hot Toys has also unveiled an incredibly detailed collectible figure based on this new version of the character, standing nearly fifty-one centimeters tall and crafted from silicone material over an inner skeleton for a seamless joint design. The figure features a newly sculpted head with two interchangeable face options and rolling eyeballs, along with twenty-eight points of articulation designed to capture the character’s movie-accurate expressions.

This level of collectible detail highlights the significance of this design shift within Marvel. Instead of making minor tweaks, the studio scrapped earlier concepts, including designs for a Gray Hulk variant that ultimately did not make the final cut, opting instead to fully embrace this more savage, greener portrayal of the character.

The pressing question fans are now asking is whether this marks a lasting change for the Hulk or just a temporary return to the past for this film. With Ruffalo’s future involvement in either ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ or ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ yet to be officially confirmed, how this transformation resolves could significantly impact the character’s trajectory in Marvel’s upcoming crossover events.

Fans have been waiting for roughly seven years for the Savage Hulk’s return, with the Smart Hulk persona sparking ongoing debate since its introduction in ‘Avengers: Endgame.’ Whether Marvel chooses to keep this more dangerous version around for the long haul or treats it as a one-time story beat remains to be seen.

With ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ set to hit theaters on July 31, fans will finally get to see this reimagined Hulk in action rather than just concept art and collectible previews. Do you want Marvel to keep the Savage Hulk around permanently? Share your thoughts in the comments.
