Netflix has created an entire genre around families facing dire situations, and few concepts feel as disturbingly realistic as being trapped in your own home with no escape. This is the unsettling premise of ‘The Last House,’ the streaming service’s latest sci-fi survival thriller that premiered on August 7.

Directed by Louis Leterrier, the film follows the Delgados, a family of four whose typical life in Seattle is turned upside down when an unexpected rainstorm envelops their neighborhood, sealing every door and window shut. Jason, portrayed by Wagner Moura, is an unemployed engineer burdened by guilt over the family’s financial woes, while Ann, played by Greta Lee, remains the family’s optimistic anchor as their children, Graham and Ruth, navigate the escalating crisis.

As the film progresses, the mystery of their confinement gradually unravels. Ruth, depicted at various ages by Riley Chung and Emma Ho, discovers that the beings responsible for their entrapment are not aliens but a newly identified species of deep-sea creatures that have surfaced from the ocean’s depths. These creatures manipulate water and rainfall to trap humans in their homes, slowly starving them.

The film does not shy away from depicting loss. The only confirmed fatalities viewers witness are Mrs. Richardson, a neighbor, and a woman caught outside during the storm. Additionally, Jason is forced to put down their dog, Cass, when his heart medication runs out, and during a desperate moment, Graham sacrifices their pet fish to stave off starvation.

After five years of being trapped in their sinking home, the family manages to disable one of the creatures using a harpoon rigged by Graham. This gives Jason the leverage to demand their freedom. However, when the creature refuses, Ruth implores her father to show mercy instead of acting on his threat. Jason ultimately heeds her plea, marking a pivotal emotional moment in the film.

That act of mercy proves beneficial. The creature not only grants the family their freedom but also communicates with others outside, indicating that the Delgados deserve to survive. Wagner Moura discussed this moment with ScreenRant, emphasizing that it represents Jason finally valuing his daughter’s instincts over his own ego, highlighting the film’s central theme of trusting children.

With their home finally collapsing behind them, the family escapes outside for the first time in five years, commandeering a deceased neighbor’s boat and renaming it Cassidy in honor of their late dog. They set sail in search of other survivors. The film concludes with a time jump, revealing that Ruth survives into adulthood and narrates the story, voiced by Arden Cho, as the family reaches out into the unknown and receives a distorted response: “Hello.”

This ambiguous ending leaves ample room for a potential sequel, resetting the timestamp to “Day 1” of their new life outdoors just as the credits roll. Whether Netflix will greenlight a follow-up to continue the Delgados’ journey in this strange new post-apocalyptic world remains uncertain, but the door has certainly been left ajar.
