Ian McKellen has once again tackled one of the internet’s most hotly debated fantasy questions: who would emerge victorious in a duel between Gandalf and Dumbledore. This topic frequently arises due to both characters being regarded as powerful and wise wizards from two of the most prominent fantasy franchises in literature and film.

McKellen is widely recognized for his portrayal of Gandalf in Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy, a role he reprised in The Hobbit. His performance solidified Gandalf as one of the most iconic figures in contemporary fantasy cinema. Given this strong association, McKellen is often asked to compare his character with others, particularly Harry Potter’s Albus Dumbledore.

According to The Guardian, McKellen provided a direct and playful response when posed with the question. He remarked, “Why on earth would they be fighting? But Gandy, of course, would win. The original wizard.” His response indicates that he firmly supports Gandalf while also dismissing the notion of the two characters ever needing to battle.

Gandalf and Dumbledore are frequently compared due to their shared archetype: older, wise, powerful magical mentors with long beards and a strong moral compass. However, their origins differ significantly. Gandalf hails from J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth mythology, where he is a divine being sent to guide and protect the world, while Dumbledore is a highly skilled human wizard within the Harry Potter universe.

Interestingly, McKellen was considered for the role of Dumbledore after Richard Harris passed away, but he declined the opportunity. Reports suggest this was influenced by past criticism from Harris regarding McKellen’s acting, which made him hesitant to take over the role. Ultimately, the part went to Michael Gambon, who portrayed Dumbledore for the remainder of the original film series.

Beyond this debate, McKellen remains active in major fantasy franchises. He is set to appear in upcoming projects like The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, directed by Andy Serkis, and also features in Avengers: Doomsday. Despite his new roles, Gandalf continues to be the character most closely associated with him, which is why questions like this continue to follow him years later.
