‘The Lord of the Rings The Rings of Power’ Season 3 First Look at Anarion
Middle-earth’s royal bloodlines have always held significance beyond the individual characters wearing the crowns, and Season 3 of Prime Video’s epic fantasy series is set to deepen one of its most important family trees. Fans familiar with Isildur’s pivotal role in Middle-earth’s lore are about to meet a character who has been absent from the narrative until now.
This missing piece of the family puzzle is finally being revealed. During the San Diego Comic Con Hall H panel for ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power,’ Prime Video unveiled its first official look at Andrew Richardson as Anarion, the younger son of Elendil and the younger brother of Isildur.
Richardson’s character is introduced as part of one of the most historically significant families in Tolkien’s mythology, directly linked to the founding of the kingdoms of Gondor and Arnor. Anarion’s inclusion in the cast indicates that Season 3 will delve deeper into the human lineage that ultimately influences the events leading to the Third Age.
Richardson was announced alongside several other cast additions during the same panel, including Eddie Marsan as Thrain, a descendant of Dwarven royalty from ‘The Hobbit,’ and Adam Young as Marnukh, a mysterious original Orc character whose true loyalties remain uncertain as the new season approaches. Zubin Varla also joins the cast as Khamul the Easterling, a Ringwraith making his debut this season.
This expanding ensemble reflects the ambitious scope of Season 3. According to the new synopsis shared at the panel, Middle-earth is fully engulfed in war this season, with Sauron drawing closer to completing the One Ring while various factions across the realm grapple with their loyalties.
The panel also showcased the season’s first official trailer, which opens with Sauron, portrayed by Charlie Vickers, addressing his followers as molten metal is poured into a familiar ring-shaped mold. The footage traverses several major storylines, including a lighter moment between Galadriel and her newly introduced love interest Celeborn, played by Jamie Campbell Bower, alongside darker elements involving encroaching Orc forces and the enigmatic Dark Wizard portrayed by Ciaran Hinds.
Introducing Anarion into the mix adds a more personal stake to the trailer’s overarching themes of impending war and shifting alliances for longtime fans of the source material. Isildur’s narrative has always held significant weight within Tolkien’s mythology, and bringing in his brother opens up opportunities to explore that family dynamic in ways the series has not previously had the chance to do.
In addition to the human storylines, the panel confirmed a variety of new creatures set to appear this season, including Fell-beasts, war elephants known as Mumakil, and armored figures called Nazgnagol, described as Second Age versions of the Nazgul. These Nazgnagol even made a surprise physical appearance during the Hall H presentation, walking onto the stage in a moment meant to honor Sauron’s growing threat.
With so many new characters and creatures being introduced simultaneously, Season 3 is shaping up to be the most ambitious chapter of the series yet in terms of scale. Richardson’s role as Anarion fits seamlessly into this broader expansion, providing the show with another narrative thread as it builds toward the events that will ultimately define the Second Age’s descent into legend.
‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’ Season 3 is set to premiere on November 11 on Prime Video, giving fans a few more months to speculate on how Anarion’s storyline will unfold.
