Few fantasy series have carried the weight of expectation that ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’ has. Amazon acquired the television rights from the Tolkien Estate in 2017 and committed to a multi-season production, with the first season becoming the most-watched of any Prime Video original series. Although the second season saw a dip in viewership, it remained strong and was praised by critics as a significant improvement over the debut.

The second season concluded with some of the franchise’s most pivotal events, including the forging of the Nine Rings and the revelation that the mysterious Stranger was Gandalf. Showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay have outlined a five-season plan, and Prime Video officially confirmed the third season in February 2025. Filming took place at Shepperton Studios in the UK, and fans have eagerly awaited the continuation of the story.

Now, the new season boasts a fresh visual identity. Prime Video has released a new poster for ‘The Rings of Power’ ahead of the third season’s premiere on November 11, showcasing Galadriel and Celeborn in a tender embrace within a sunlit forest.

The third season jumps ahead several years, taking place at the height of the War of the Elves and Sauron. According to the cast, five years have passed, and Sauron has been locked away in Barad-dûr, trying and failing to forge the One Ring. He is now determined to succeed, and the showrunners have confirmed that his quest is central to the season.

The first trailer, unveiled at San Diego Comic-Con in July, depicted Middle-earth engulfed in war, with Morfydd Clark’s Galadriel leading her forces against the Dark Lord. It also showcased the forging of the Ring and a moment where Sauron confronts the Balrog to learn how to withstand volcanic heat.

The cast features several notable additions. Simon Pegg voices the Balrog, which will speak for the first time in the series, while Eddie Marsan plays Thrain, the older brother of King Durin. Andrew Richardson joins as Anarion, who arrives in Númenor, and Adam Young portrays an orc named Marnukh, who seems to ally with Galadriel and Arondir.

Returning cast members include Clark, Vickers, Robert Aramayo as Elrond, Daniel Weyman as Gandalf, Cynthia Addai-Robinson as Míriel, Owain Arthur as Durin, and Ismael Cruz Cordova as Arondir. Gandalf, previously known as the Stranger, is now fully himself.

Unlike the first two seasons, which were released weekly, the new season will take a different approach. The first four episodes will be available on November 11 across more than 240 countries and territories, followed by two episodes on November 18 and the final two on November 25. This results in a compact three-week run of eight episodes.

The schedule also comes just before a busy period for Prime Video, positioning the series back at the forefront of the fantasy conversation. Reports suggest that Season 4 cameras are expected to begin filming in early 2027, indicating that the five-season plan is still on track.

With darker imagery and a romantic poster, the promotional campaign hints at a season that will blend epic battles with emotional reunions.
