‘The Magic Faraway Tree’ Star Andrew Garfield Opens Up About Secret Instagram Account
Andrew Garfield has established himself as one of Hollywood’s most intentionally offline stars, having never maintained a public social media presence throughout his decade-plus career. This absence has often been viewed as a testament to his genuine restraint, making him a rare celebrity who has managed to avoid the incessant scrolling that characterizes much of modern digital life.
However, this week, Garfield revealed a more honest side during a conversation with Variety while promoting his new film ‘The Magic Faraway Tree.’ He disclosed that he actually has a secret Instagram account, which he uses frequently enough to feel uneasy about how much of his life it has quietly consumed.
Garfield was candid about the depth of his habit, stating, “I’m as addicted as anybody. My screen time notifications are horrific to me. It’s like, I’ve given all of those hours to nothing,” he told Variety. He added, “It’s genuinely enraging because we don’t have as much control over these impulses as we should, and it’s been by design. It’s pretty dark when you look at it.”
When discussing what fills his feed, Garfield shared a surprisingly specific insight into his browsing habits. He mentioned that his Instagram activity revolves around “weird ceramics” and “lots of Japanese kind of craftspeople,” showcasing a niche interest for someone with the ability to follow a wide array of content.
This isn’t the first time Garfield has acknowledged maintaining a social media presence despite his public stance against it. In March, at the London premiere of ‘The Magic Faraway Tree,’ he referred to his “creeper accounts,” explaining, “I don’t have social media… I have, like, creeper accounts in certain places,” while emphasizing the need to stay “very, very disciplined” to avoid overusing them.
His earlier admission came after a moment when his ‘We Live in Time’ co-star Florence Pugh seemed to inadvertently reveal his scrolling habits during a lighthearted interview, suggesting he browses platforms like X despite his public denial of having any official accounts. While Garfield quickly refuted the specifics at that time, the pattern of quiet acknowledgment followed by more detailed confessions has emerged in several interviews this year.
Garfield’s latest comments resonate with the themes explored in ‘The Magic Faraway Tree,’ an adaptation of Enid Blyton’s classic book series that delves into issues of technology and screen dependency. In the film, Garfield stars alongside Claire Foy as Tim and Polly, a London couple who move their tech-dependent family to the countryside, where their youngest daughter discovers a magical tree inhabited by elf-like creatures.
During the same conversation with Variety, Garfield elaborated on his broader feelings about phone addiction, expressing a common desire to escape from devices entirely. “I think we’ve all had the impulse to smash our phones or throw it into the forest or throw it into the sea because we know it’s taking our lives from us in some way,” he said, framing this compulsion as something intentionally designed into these platforms rather than a personal failing.
For an actor who has spent years crafting a reputation as one of the few major stars genuinely opting out of public social media, Garfield’s openness about his private scrolling habits presents a refreshingly honest contrast to that image. Given his continued discussions on the topic during multiple recent press engagements, it’s clear this particular confession is not one he is trying to downplay.
