Streaming services often depend on their extensive back catalogs to keep subscribers engaged between major releases, and this year, Disney+’s Star Wars library exemplifies that trend. While newer shows vie for attention with fresh episodes and marketing efforts, one series without any new content has quietly taken center stage.

That series is ‘The Mandalorian,’ which hasn’t aired a new episode since April 2023, when its third season wrapped up. Despite this lengthy hiatus, the show has emerged as the most-streamed live-action Star Wars series on Disney+ in 2026, according to data from Luminate.

The extent of this dominance is truly remarkable. Luminate reported that ‘The Mandalorian’ amassed 2.4 billion minutes on Disney+ during the first half of 2026 alone, a figure that surpassed every piece of new Star Wars content released on the platform this year, except for the animated series ‘Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord.’

Luminate’s analysis attributes much of this surge to viewers catching up in anticipation of the theatrical release of ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu,’ which premiered on May 22. Fans seemingly seized the opportunity to revisit the original series before watching Din Djarin and Grogu’s next adventure on the big screen, leading to a resurgence in viewings of earlier episodes long after their initial release.

This rewatch trend extended across the show’s seasons. According to Cosmic Book News’ breakdown of Luminate’s figures, ‘The Mandalorian’ secured three of the top ten spots on Disney+’s entire originals chart for the first half of the year, with Season 1 accumulating 887.9 million minutes, Season 3 with 790.2 million, and Season 2 at 728 million, despite these seasons being seven, three, and six years old, respectively.

Each of these seasons outperformed every new Star Wars episode released on Disney+ this year, highlighting how much the platform’s Star Wars presence continues to rely on this particular show’s library. Luminate bluntly summarized this trend in its Q1 report, stating that for Star Wars, “the library is one show.”

Other Star Wars titles lagged significantly behind ‘The Mandalorian’ during this period. ‘Andor’ garnered 918 million minutes a year after its final season ended, while ‘The Book of Boba Fett’ recorded 358 million minutes, and ‘The Bad Batch’ reached 268 million. Notably, ‘The Acolyte’ did not appear on the chart at all, failing to surpass even ‘The Bad Batch’ despite earlier discussions about a potential resurgence in viewership based on FlixPatrol rankings.

The connection to the theatrical release adds another dimension to this narrative, with ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ concluding its box office run at $345.2 million. While this figure reflects the film’s performance rather than streaming numbers directly, the timing between the movie’s release and the uptick in catch-up viewing indicates a clear relationship between the two.

For a franchise that has consistently expanded its television presence year after year, having a show with no new episodes since 2023 still outperform nearly every new release speaks volumes about ‘The Mandalorian’s’ enduring cultural impact and Disney+’s broader Star Wars strategy. Whether this trend will change once Season 4 eventually premieres remains to be seen, but for now, Din Djarin and Grogu’s original escapades show no signs of waning in popularity among Star Wars fans.
