Most ‘Star Wars’ fans recognize Pedro Pascal as the voice and face of Din Djarin, but fewer are familiar with the name of the man who brought the character’s physicality to life. Brendan Wayne, grandson of Hollywood icon John Wayne, has donned the Mandalorian armor since the very first episode, and his harrowing experience during the production of ‘The Mandalorian’ is one of the most gripping survival stories in recent television history.

Wayne, along with stuntman Lateef Crowder, contributes to the physicality and stunts of Din Djarin. While Wayne primarily portrays the character in seasons 1 and 3, Crowder handles the impressive fight scenes throughout all three seasons, with Pascal providing the voice. This collaborative effort is often overlooked, making Wayne’s near-death experience all the more impactful.

At the beginning of season two’s production, Wayne encountered a life-threatening medical crisis when a hernia patch tore his intestine, leading to severe sepsis. He spent 42 days in the ICU, during which he recounted, “I died three times, I think, while I was there. Just died.”

Initially believing he had kidney stones, Wayne’s visit to the emergency room revealed a much more serious issue. This led to weeks filled with uncertainty, surgeries, and moments where his life was truly at risk.

Remarkably, Wayne returned to production shortly after leaving the hospital. He expressed eagerness to get back to work and visited the set to see Timothy Olyphant, who portrays Cobb Vanth. Just ten days after being cleared, he was back on set, working long fifteen-hour days.

During the filming of season 2, Wayne had to wrap himself daily due to an open wound that had not fully healed. The image of someone quietly managing a serious injury while wearing full Mandalorian armor for such long hours has resonated deeply with fans who have reacted to the story online.

Wayne auditioned for the role in 2018, bringing authenticity to the character by honoring the cowboy code instilled in him by his mother. His connection to John Wayne’s legacy is evident in the way Din Djarin carries himself on screen.

He has shared, “You see the angles when he sits at his hip, there’s a reason why people say, ‘That looks like John Wayne.’ It’s because it’s me. That’s just my natural resting body.” This adds a fascinating layer to one of the most beloved characters in the current ‘Star Wars’ universe, highlighting the often invisible work of performance.

Due to Wayne’s hospitalization during much of ‘The Mandalorian’ season 2’s production, Pedro Pascal stepped in to wear the suit for almost the entire season. Ironically, the season that fans closely associate with Pascal in the armor was significantly shaped by Wayne’s absence and the medical struggles he faced off set.
