‘The Odyssey’ Achieves Box Office Milestone No Non-Disney or Marvel Film Has Since ‘Barbie’
Original theatrical filmmaking has faced challenges at the global box office over the past decade, with franchise sequels and established intellectual properties dominating the top earners. However, every so often, a filmmaker with significant cultural influence manages to demonstrate that original stories can still attract billion-dollar audiences.
Christopher Nolan has built a reputation for delivering compelling cinema, and his latest project has elevated that status even further. ‘The Odyssey,’ his grand adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek poem, has continued its remarkable theatrical run, surpassing milestones that most blockbusters never achieve.
The film has now surpassed 1.4 billion dollars at the global box office, officially becoming the first non-Disney or Marvel film since 2023’s ‘Barbie’ to reach this impressive threshold. This achievement places ‘The Odyssey’ in a unique category, especially considering how franchise-driven content has dominated the billion-dollar club in recent years.
Featuring Matt Damon as Odysseus, King of Ithaca, alongside a star-studded cast that includes Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya, and Charlize Theron, ‘The Odyssey’ debuted domestically on July 17 with a staggering 123.5 million dollar opening weekend. By late August, the film had grossed 524.6 million dollars domestically and 1.36 billion dollars worldwide within just 36 days of release.
This accomplishment becomes even more significant when viewed in the context of Nolan’s filmography. ‘The Odyssey’ is now officially the director’s highest-grossing film, surpassing 2012’s ‘The Dark Knight Rises,’ which previously held the record with 1.08 billion dollars for fourteen years.
Jim Orr, President of Domestic Theatrical Distribution at Universal Pictures, attributed the film’s sustained success to Nolan’s established rapport with audiences. “Christopher Nolan has earned audiences’ trust by consistently delivering must-see theatrical events, and ‘The Odyssey’ is him operating at the peak of his powers,” Orr stated, noting that the film has encouraged repeat viewings and significant interest in premium large formats throughout its run.
In addition to becoming Nolan’s biggest film, ‘The Odyssey’ has also claimed the title of the highest-grossing R-rated movie in history, unadjusted for inflation, surpassing 2024’s ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ with its 1.338 billion dollar global total. This milestone places ‘The Odyssey’ alongside ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ and ‘Joker’ as only the third R-rated film to cross the billion-dollar mark worldwide.

Much of ‘The Odyssey’s’ ongoing success has coincided with the release of ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ which debuted in theaters just as Nolan’s film was gaining momentum. Instead of competing for the same audience, the two films have created a modern version of the ‘Barbenheimer’ phenomenon, contributing to the best box office weekend in U.S. history during their overlap.
Together, ‘The Odyssey’ and ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ have already generated over 2.1 billion dollars at the global box office, a figure likely to surpass the combined 2.4 billion dollar total of ‘Barbie’ and ‘Oppenheimer’ from the original Barbenheimer summer in 2023. This comparison is particularly fitting, as Nolan was involved in one half of that earlier cultural moment.
With ‘The Odyssey’ still showing in premium formats worldwide and expected to launch soon in China, the second-largest moviegoing market, the film’s final total remains uncertain. For an industry that has been concerned about the viability of original, non-franchise films, ‘The Odyssey’s’ ongoing success provides a compelling answer.
