‘The Odyssey’ Achieves Historic Box Office Success for Christopher Nolan
Two weeks into its theatrical release, Christopher Nolan’s latest epic shows no signs of slowing down, with box office numbers climbing to historic levels. What began as a massive opening weekend has evolved into one of the most sustained box office performances of the year, as ‘The Odyssey’ continues to lead ticket sales well beyond its debut.
Universal’s adaptation of Homer’s ancient epic poem opened with an impressive $123.5 million domestically, marking the largest weekend debut of any film in 2026 so far. This remarkable launch alone would have deemed the film a success, but its ability to maintain audience interest in the weeks following has transformed it into a genuine box office phenomenon.
In its second weekend, the film generated another $87 million, setting a record for Nolan’s best sophomore weekend at the domestic box office and pushing its 10-day total past $286 million. According to Deadline, this weekend also ranks as the second-best sophomore outing ever for an R-rated film, second only to ‘Deadpool & Wolverine.’
The film’s performance during weekdays has been equally impressive. ‘The Odyssey’ recorded Nolan’s best-ever Tuesday at the domestic box office with over $21 million, surpassing his previous record set by ‘The Dark Knight’ in 2008, and becoming the second-best Tuesday of the year, trailing only ‘Toy Story 5.’
Such strong weekday performance, combined with modest day-to-day declines for a film of this magnitude, has kept ‘The Odyssey’ on track to surpass several significant benchmarks. With a domestic total already in the high $280 million to $290 million range after less than two weeks, the film is quickly approaching Nolan’s own ‘Oppenheimer,’ which concluded its theatrical run with $330 million domestically.
If this trajectory continues, ‘The Odyssey’ could exceed ‘Oppenheimer’s’ full domestic total in under two weeks of release, a remarkable feat for a three-hour, R-rated literary adaptation. This would also position the film among Nolan’s highest-grossing domestic releases, trailing only his two ‘Dark Knight’ films at the top of his career rankings.

Globally, the film has already surpassed approximately $640 million and continues to rise, supported by strong performances in international markets alongside its domestic success. Much of this achievement can be attributed to the film’s extensive Imax presence, having been filmed entirely with Imax cameras, a first for any feature film, which has helped it become one of the fastest releases ever to reach $100 million in that format.
The film’s ensemble cast, featuring Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, and Charlize Theron, has clearly resonated with audiences eager for large-scale, prestige-driven filmmaking. This appeal has helped the film maintain strong legs even as competing releases have entered the marketplace.
With ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ now also in theaters, exhibitors are reportedly optimistic about the pairing of these two major hits carrying the industry through what is typically a quieter stretch of the summer season. Instead of competing for the same audience, both films seem positioned to benefit from a moviegoing public eager to return to theaters in large numbers.
As ‘The Odyssey’ continues its historic journey through the record books, it’s becoming increasingly evident that Nolan has not only delivered a critical success but also one of the defining box office stories of the year.
