Christopher Nolan’s forthcoming film The Odyssey is generating buzz even before its debut, primarily due to its staggering budget. According to reports from Jordan Ruimy and industry insider Matt Belloni of Puck, the film’s estimated cost is around 250 million dollars, making it one of the most expensive projects in Nolan’s career.

The report also indicates that this budget aligns with the scale of The Dark Knight Rises, which previously held the title of Nolan’s most costly film. This information is derived from early production updates and industry tracking of major studio projects, as reported by film journalism outlets.

The Odyssey draws inspiration from the ancient Greek epic poem by Homer. It chronicles the adventures of Odysseus, the king of Ithaca, as he endeavors to return home after the Trojan War. His journey is fraught with peril, featuring mythological creatures and formidable challenges, including encounters with sirens, cyclops, and other legendary figures that have cemented this tale as a classic in literature.

Given the expansive nature of the source material, the film is anticipated to utilize extensive visual effects and practical filmmaking techniques. The report emphasizes that bringing these mythological elements to life will necessitate a considerable production budget. Adapting this story is widely regarded as a daunting task, with many considering it one of the most challenging ancient texts to translate to the screen.

Directed by Christopher Nolan, who is also writing and producing alongside Emma Thomas under their production company Syncopy, The Odyssey continues Nolan’s tradition of large-scale cinematic endeavors with its ambitious scope and intricate global production design.

The cast features one of the most prominent ensembles in recent cinema, including Matt Damon as Odysseus, Anne Hathaway as Penelope, along with Tom Holland, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, and Lupita Nyong’o. The report mentions that further casting announcements are anticipated as production progresses.

Filming has taken place in various international locations, including Morocco, Greece, Italy, Scotland, Iceland, Western Sahara, Malta, and parts of Los Angeles. This diverse array of settings reflects the journey-centric narrative of Odysseus as he traverses different lands and treacherous environments.

A key production detail is that The Odyssey is being filmed entirely on IMAX 70mm film cameras, showcasing Nolan’s commitment to large-format filmmaking and practical visual storytelling. The production timeline commenced in 2024, with casting continuing into 2025 and filming expected to run throughout the year.

The release date for The Odyssey is currently slated for July 17, when it will hit theaters globally through Universal Pictures. A significant IMAX rollout is anticipated, continuing Nolan’s longstanding association with the format.

The Odyssey is poised to become one of the most expensive and ambitious film productions of the decade. With its substantial budget, international filming locations, and an all-star cast, it is already being positioned as one of the most significant cinematic events of 2026.
