Christopher Nolan’s mythological epic has spent its first full week in theaters reshaping expectations for what an original, non-franchise blockbuster can achieve at the domestic box office. Following a historic opening weekend, the key question became whether that momentum would persist once the weekday slowdown set in, and the film has been answering that question emphatically.

Early estimates indicated that ‘The Odyssey’ opened with $124.5 million domestically over its first three days, though final studio figures adjusted that total slightly down to $123.5 million after Monday’s numbers were tallied. This result made it the third highest opening of 2026, trailing only Disney and Pixar’s ‘Toy Story 5’ and Illumination’s ‘Super Mario Galaxy Movie’.

According to the latest daily tracking, ‘The Odyssey’ earned an estimated $21.2 million on its most recent reported day, continuing to overshadow everything else in theaters. Disney’s struggling live-action ‘Moana’ remake landed a distant second with $4.1 million, while Universal’s ‘Minions & Monsters’ and Pixar’s ‘Toy Story 5’ rounded out the middle of the chart with $3.4 million and $3.1 million, respectively. The horror sequel ‘Evil Dead Burn’ closed out the top five with under $1 million.

The significant gap between first and second place has characterized the film’s run thus far. On Monday, ‘The Odyssey’ pulled in $18.67 million at the box office, marking the best Monday result of the year to date. This figure slightly surpassed the $17.3 million that ‘Toy Story 5’ achieved on its first Monday and was about 50% ahead of the $12.67 million that Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer’ garnered on its first Monday. Among all of Nolan’s films, ‘The Odyssey’ ranks third for Monday earnings, following ‘The Dark Knight’ ($24.4M, July 21, 2008) and ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ ($19.3M, July 23, 2012).

As of Monday, ‘The Odyssey’ has earned $142.1 million domestically and $140 million internationally, bringing its total worldwide box office tally to $282.1 million against its $250 million production budget. While its Rotten Tomatoes critics’ score has slightly dipped from a near-perfect start, it still holds a remarkable 94% fresh rating, tying for Nolan’s highest-rated film. Audiences have rated it even higher, with a 97% fresh score, setting a new record for the acclaimed director.

In contrast, the rest of the chart tells a much more challenging story. Given that ‘Moana’ was so costly, with a $250 million price tag, and theater owners retain roughly half of the revenues, the film is on track to lose at least $100 million during its theatrical run. Conversely, ‘Toy Story 5’ remains one of the summer’s biggest success stories, grossing $430.9 million domestically, and its worldwide total of $958.4 million is expected to surpass the billion-dollar mark before its run concludes.

With no significant new wide releases set to challenge it, ‘The Odyssey’ appears poised to maintain its dominance on daily charts for at least another week. For an original R-rated epic centered around practical effects and a three-hour runtime, this kind of sustained daily performance well beyond the opening weekend is a clear indication that Nolan’s investment in traditional, large-scale filmmaking has paid off substantially.
