Christopher Nolan has dedicated much of his career to crafting sci-fi epics, war dramas, thrillers, and superhero films, but it appears that horror could be the next genre on his agenda. Following the completion of ‘The Odyssey,’ the Oscar-winning director expressed a growing interest in creating a horror film, with the only barrier being the need for the right story.

During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter to promote ‘The Odyssey,’ Nolan discussed various topics, including the film’s record-breaking debut and his future aspirations, with horror being a significant focus. When asked if ‘The Odyssey’ had quenched his thirst for horror, Nolan clarified that it had sparked even more interest.

“It very much whets my appetite for more. But I’ve always believed that horror as a genre has to be approached very carefully from a conceptual point of view. In other words, you have to have an amazing idea.”

This revelation is likely to thrill fans who have longed to see Nolan delve into the horror genre. Although his films often feature tension and suspense, he has yet to direct a full-fledged horror movie. While many of his works contain dark elements, they have always been categorized within other genres. The interviewer noted that ‘The Odyssey’ already incorporates several horror aspects, a point Nolan acknowledged with a playful remark.

“They don’t need to beg me to tell a horror story anymore. Just buy a ticket.” Nevertheless, Nolan emphasized that making a horror film isn’t about discovering new filmmaking techniques or special effects; for him, it all begins with the story.

He said that a horror film requires a compelling idea to sustain the entire experience. Nolan cited Brian De Palma’s ‘Obsession’ as an example of a film built around a strong concept. “It’s not about the technical side. It’s not about what technical itches I would have to scratch. It’s about story. So I’m always looking.”

This philosophy aligns with Nolan’s filmmaking style, which has consistently focused on original concepts and narratives that challenge viewers. Whether exploring dreams within dreams in ‘Inception,’ time manipulation in ‘Tenet,’ or the ethical dilemmas in ‘Oppenheimer,’ Nolan has always centered his films around a core idea rather than relying solely on visual spectacle.

His latest project, ‘The Odyssey,’ is already proving to be another significant success. As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, the film debuted with a staggering $264 million worldwide, marking the biggest opening weekend of Nolan’s career and further solidifying his impressive box office record.

Despite this success, it seems Nolan is already contemplating his next move. While he did not confirm that a horror movie will be his upcoming project, he made it clear that the genre has captured his interest.

For now, fans will have to wait until Nolan discovers a concept he deems worthy of becoming his first true horror film. Based on his remarks, that idea has yet to materialize. However, when it does, it seems he will be ready to embrace a genre that many moviegoers have been eager for him to explore for years.
