‘The Odyssey’ Joins Exclusive Box Office Club with Record-Breaking Success
Christopher Nolan has spent decades establishing himself as one of the few directors whose name alone can drive box office success, and 2026 has proven to be an exceptionally remarkable year for him. His latest film, ‘The Odyssey,’ a grand adaptation of Homer’s ancient epic, features a star-studded cast including Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya, and Robert Pattinson. Since its release, the film has consistently surpassed expectations for what a nearly three-hour adult drama can achieve in a marketplace still largely dominated by franchise films.
The film’s momentum shows no signs of waning as it enters its fifth weekend. After debuting with the fourth-largest opening weekend of 2026 and surpassing $1 billion globally earlier this month, ‘The Odyssey’ has continued to climb steadily through August, defying the typical post-opening decline that many blockbusters experience.
As of Saturday morning, projections indicated that the film would earn a three-day total of $23 million by the end of its fifth weekend, according to Deadline, bringing its cumulative domestic gross to $504.4 million. This achievement makes ‘The Odyssey’ the 24th film in history to cross the half-billion mark domestically, concluding its first full month in theaters with a milestone that few films ever reach.
Reaching $500 million domestically is a rare feat, even among successful blockbusters, and ‘The Odyssey’ accomplishing this in under five weeks places it in the company of a select few true box office giants. Given the film’s adult-oriented themes and lengthy runtime, hitting this number so quickly has surprised even seasoned box office analysts.
With its momentum still building, ‘The Odyssey’ seems poised to climb even higher on the all-time domestic chart in the coming weeks. According to Deadline, continued strong holds could push its cumulative total toward $532.4 million, allowing it to surpass both 2017’s ‘Beauty and the Beast’ and 2019’s ‘Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker,’ landing it at 22nd on the all-time domestic list.
Should this trajectory continue, ‘The Odyssey’ would also become the highest-grossing Christopher Nolan film ever at the domestic box office, unadjusted for inflation, surpassing even ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ and ‘Oppenheimer.’ This distinction would solidify the film as the pinnacle of Nolan’s commercial success to date, following his blockbuster collaboration with Universal after leaving Warner Bros., and marking a significant validation of the studio’s investment in his unique brand of prestige filmmaking.

The success of ‘The Odyssey’ has also contributed to a historic year at the box office overall. The film’s ascent past $1 billion globally has made 2026 the year with the most billion-dollar hits of the decade so far, joining ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ ‘Toy Story 5,’ ‘Michael,’ and ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’ in that elite category.
This kind of concentrated box office strength across various genres and studios reflects a broader theatrical rebound that many industry analysts did not expect to happen so quickly. Universal has particularly benefited from Nolan’s transition to the studio, with his films now ranking among its highest-grossing live-action releases of all time. With awards season buzz already building around the film and its box office run still ongoing, ‘The Odyssey’ is set to remain one of the defining cinematic stories of 2026 for the rest of the year.
