‘The Odyssey’ Rotten Tomatoes Score Revealed: Critics Praise Nolan’s Epic Adventure
Christopher Nolan’s latest film, ‘The Odyssey’, has finally premiered for critics, and the initial reactions indicate that the filmmaker may have crafted one of the most significant movies of his career. This epic fantasy adventure, inspired by Homer’s ancient Greek poem, is garnering strong acclaim for its grand scale, stunning visuals, impressive performances, and ambitious storytelling.
The narrative follows Odysseus, portrayed by Matt Damon, as he strives to return home after the Trojan War. Throughout his journey, he encounters legendary creatures and challenges from Greek mythology while attempting to reunite with his wife Penelope, played by Anne Hathaway. The extensive ensemble cast also features Tom Holland, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Samantha Morton, and Charlize Theron.

‘The Odyssey’ marks one of Nolan’s most significant filmmaking challenges to date. The director utilized IMAX 70mm cameras for the entire film, making it the first feature to be entirely shot in this format. With a reported budget of around $250 million, it ranks among the most expensive productions in Nolan’s career.
Early reviews on Rotten Tomatoes indicate that critics are largely impressed, with many labeling the film a monumental cinematic achievement. Matt Neglia from Next Best Picture awarded the movie a 9/10 score, praising its vast scale and suggesting it could be a career-defining work for Nolan. He remarked that the film is “as big as stories and movies can possibly get in this day and age”, while also connecting it to themes from Nolan’s previous works.
Aaron Neuwirth from We Live Entertainment also provided a favorable review, highlighting how Nolan successfully balances blockbuster entertainment with thoughtful casting, themes, and visual effects. He noted that despite its grand ambitions, the film remains a crowd-pleasing adventure.
Louisa Moore from Screen Zealots expressed even greater enthusiasm, describing the movie as “rich, immersive, visually astonishing, emotionally devastating, and endlessly entertaining.” She commended Nolan for blending classic Hollywood adventure with a contemporary style, calling it a true cinematic experience.
However, some critics pointed out certain weaknesses despite the overall positive feedback. Edward Douglas from The Weekend Warrior rated the film 6/10, criticizing its pacing, darker scenes, and sound mix. He argued that some technical choices made parts of the film challenging to follow.
Alexander Zalben from Comic Book Club praised the cast and visuals but noted that some dialogue felt awkward at times. Meanwhile, Allison Rose from FlickDirect awarded the film 4.5/5 stars, calling it “epic, beautifully crafted Nolan storytelling,” while suggesting that a shorter runtime could have improved the film.
Nate Adams from The Only Critic awarded the film an A grade, calling it “a spectacular achievement” and commending its celebration of cinema and storytelling.
With early reviews trending positively, ‘The Odyssey’ seems poised to be another major event film from Nolan. While some critics have raised concerns about pacing and accessibility, the consensus is that the director has created something monumental, visually striking, and unlike anything else currently in theaters.
As audiences gear up to experience the film in IMAX and other premium formats, the pressing question remains whether ‘The Odyssey’ will become Nolan’s next defining masterpiece.
