‘The Office’ Banned Halloween Scene Resurfaces: ‘Koi Pond’ Cold Open Spreads Online
‘The Office‘ is well-known for its cringe comedy, with Michael Scott’s misguided antics contributing to the show’s enduring popularity long after its conclusion. Throughout its nine seasons, the series earned a reputation for delivering awkward moments that audiences have come to cherish.
However, one particular scene was deemed too controversial for broadcast. A Halloween-themed segment from the sixth season has resurfaced online this week, reminding fans that not all moments made it through the original airing unscathed.
The clip in question is the cold open from “Koi Pond,” Season 6 Episode 8, which aired on NBC on October 29, 2009. It was only shown once during its premiere and subsequently removed from reruns, but a recent post by a fan page featuring the footage has garnered over 7 million views.
In this cold open, the Dunder Mifflin team transforms their warehouse into a haunted house for the children of employees, with Daryl guiding the kids through the spooky setup. The scene captures the classic low-budget chaos of office life, with Michael Scott taking the role far too seriously, even donning a wrapped gift box reminiscent of a famous ‘SNL’ skit.
The controversy arises at the end of the tour when Michael pretends to hang himself in front of the children, followed by a message about suicide awareness. While intended to showcase Michael’s misguided good intentions, the scene was received quite differently by some viewers.
The infamous banned Halloween cold open from The Office that you won’t find on @peacock or @netflix. Michael Scott really had no boundaries. https://t.co/vppKA1PWbv

The scene was ultimately removed following complaints regarding its sensitive content. Reports suggest that it was pulled after a network executive’s wife, who had worked on suicide prevention, requested its removal. Regardless of the specific reason, the outcome was significant: it vanished from reruns, DVD releases, and streaming platforms like Netflix, Peacock, and Prime Video.
Jenna Fischer, who portrayed Pam, has also addressed the missing cold open on her ‘Office Ladies’ podcast, noting that the episode originally included the Halloween segment and aired once due to its Halloween premiere timing. This explains why the episode description still hints at a Halloween theme despite the absence of the opening.
However, the clip is not entirely lost. It was uploaded to the show’s official YouTube channel in 2017, just before Halloween, and appears in a compilation of the series’ Halloween openings. The reasons for its acceptance in that format remain unclear, but it continues to be accessible there.
The remainder of the episode, where Michael falls into a koi pond during a sales call with Jim, remains unchanged, with only the opening missing.

This isn’t the first time the series has tackled such themes. In the Season 3 episode “Safety Training,” Michael dramatically discusses the dangers of depression on the roof, with the staff ultimately talking him down. This episode remains available, making the removal of the ‘Koi Pond’ cold open even more notable.
As Halloween approaches, fans often seek out seasonal episodes, and a banned scene that many have never seen is particularly enticing. Its unavailability on major streaming platforms has only added to its allure.
This situation also highlights the evolving attitudes toward comedy. What was deemed acceptable in 2009 faced enough backlash to warrant removal, while current reactions reflect a blend of curiosity and discomfort.
