‘The Other Bennet Sister’ Christmas Special Release Date and Where to Watch
For a series centered on the notion that an overlooked character in a beloved story has much to share, ‘The Other Bennet Sister’ has made a remarkable impact. This ten-part British period drama, produced by Bad Wolf for BBC One and based on Janice Hadlow’s novel, follows Mary Bennet, the often-forgotten middle sister of Jane Austen’s iconic Bennet family, as she embarks on a rich journey of self-discovery set in Regency-era England.
The show debuted with significant critical acclaim. On Rotten Tomatoes, 97% of critics have given positive reviews, with the consensus describing it as “cozy, charming, and full of heart,” and praising both Ella Bruccoleri’s performance and the series’ innovative take on Austen’s familiar world. Unlike other adaptations that lean into romantic spectacle, ‘The Other Bennet Sister’ opts for a more introspective approach, focusing on a character who is finding herself rather than merely seeking a partner.
Clearly, audiences were eager for more. Variety has reported that ‘The Other Bennet Sister’ will return to BritBox and BBC for a three-episode Christmas special, with production set to take place in Wales this summer. Ella Bruccoleri will reprise her role as Mary, the titular Bennet sister, alongside other familiar faces from the original cast.
Screenwriter Sarah Quintrell, who wrote nine of the original ten episodes, is crafting all three parts of the special based on storylines by Hadlow. Series director Asim Abbasi is also back to direct the new chapters. The special was commissioned by Lindsay Salt, director of BBC Drama, for BBC iPlayer and BBC One, and by Jon Farrar, chief content officer of direct to consumer at BBC Studios, for BritBox North America.
The excitement from the production team is palpable. Executive producer and Bad Wolf CEO Jane Tranter shared with Variety that the response to the series has surpassed their most optimistic expectations, and that the Christmas special will allow viewers to explore what unfolds once the wedding bells fade and real life begins.
BritBox commissioning executive Jess O’Riordan expressed that the team is thrilled that audiences have connected with Mary Bennet, and her story will continue for three more chapters this holiday season.
The commercial rationale for the special is compelling. The series attracted five times more new subscribers to BritBox in its first five weeks than any previous title on the platform, contributing to the streamer’s strongest quarter yet in terms of subscriber growth. In the United Kingdom, it achieved the largest launch for a new drama across all platforms since May 2025, drawing in 7.3 million viewers within its first 28 days.
While a specific premiere date has yet to be confirmed, the Christmas special will air exclusively in the United States and Canada on BritBox and exclusively in the United Kingdom on BBC iPlayer and BBC One. With the original series leaving viewers deeply invested in Mary’s journey, the pressing question now is whether you hope the special delves into the quieter complexities of her life after marriage or if you want to see it reunite the wider Bennet circle for one more festive gathering.
