Prime Video’s ‘The Rings of Power’ is making significant strides in planning its future, with new production updates indicating a much larger long-term vision for the series set in Middle-earth.

Recent reports from industry sources and production insights shared by Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios reveal that preparations are underway for a potential fourth season, even before the third season has debuted.

The third season of ‘The Rings of Power’ is slated to premiere in November, continuing the narrative of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Second Age. Although season four has yet to receive an official green light, early planning is already in motion. The UK-based production team is reportedly gearing up for preproduction work for a fourth season later this year, with filming anticipated to commence in early 2027 if all goes according to plan.

While Prime Video has not confirmed the renewal yet, the platform has consistently shown robust support for the series. It stands as one of Amazon’s most significant global productions, drawing from Tolkien’s appendices within ‘The Lord of the Rings’ universe. The streamer has previously reported that the series has captivated over 185 million viewers worldwide, with Amazon MGM Studios labeling it as one of its most successful titles.

Season three is expected to advance the storyline several years from the events of season two, focusing on the peak of the War of the Elves and Sauron. At this juncture, Sauron is amassing power and preparing to forge the One Ring, which will ultimately be pivotal in controlling Middle-earth. The upcoming season is anticipated to delve into this escalating conflict and the rising tensions among various kingdoms.

If production proceeds as planned, season four could potentially debut around 2028. This timeline aligns with the historical production and post-production cycles of previous seasons, which have been extensive due to the show’s scale. When Amazon first acquired the rights to Tolkien’s Second Age material in 2017, it reportedly committed to a five-season plan, indicating that the narrative is set to unfold beyond the forthcoming seasons.

Simultaneously, the world of Middle-earth is expanding on the film front as well. Warner Bros. is actively developing new projects based on Tolkien’s Third Age material. One of the most anticipated films is ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum’, directed by Andy Serkis and set to release in December 2027.

This film will feature returning actors such as Ian McKellen as Gandalf and Elijah Wood as Frodo, alongside Serkis reprising his role as Gollum. It is set between ‘The Hobbit’ and ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring’, focusing on the quest to find Gollum before Sauron’s forces can capture him.

Additional projects are also in the works, including ‘The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past’, which Peter Jackson has been involved with. Jackson has expressed interest in exploring more of Tolkien’s broader writings, including ‘The Silmarillion’, noting that there remains a wealth of material suitable for adaptation into films.

With both television and film projects expanding simultaneously, ‘The Lord of the Rings’ franchise is poised to maintain a significant presence in fantasy storytelling for years to come.
