Anne Rice’s vampire universe is embarking on a new journey with ‘The Vampire Lestat’, the latest series in AMC’s expanding adaptation of ‘The Vampire Chronicles’.

This new show continues the narrative that began with ‘Interview With the Vampire’, shifting the focus from Louis de Pointe du Lac to the charismatic and perilous vampire Lestat de Lioncourt.

‘The Vampire Lestat’ will trace Lestat’s rise to fame during the 1980s. Unlike previous seasons that centered on Louis’ memories, this new storyline delves into Lestat’s own experiences as both a vampire and a global rock star.

The series is adapted from Anne Rice’s second ‘Vampire Chronicles’ novel, first published in 1985. In this tale, Lestat steps into the limelight, using music as a means to unveil himself to the world. As his fame escalates, he draws the attention of both humans and vampires, leading to new dangers and conflicts.

The official synopsis of Anne Rice’s novel describes Lestat as a character traversing different eras in search of answers about his existence. It states, “Once an aristocrat in the heady days of pre-revolutionary France, now a rock star in the demonic, shimmering 1980s, he rushes through the centuries in search of others like him, seeking answers to the mystery of his eternal, terrifying existence.”

Early reviews from critics have been overwhelmingly positive. Many believe the series successfully broadens the universe introduced in ‘Interview With the Vampire’, while providing Lestat with a more profound and personal storyline.

Writing for Winter is Coming, Federica Bocco commended the show, calling it “the most layered – and yet raw – form of storytelling.” She noted that no other current series compares to what this show is achieving.

Lacy Baugher of Den of Geek described the adaptation as “darkly magical” and praised its ambitious style. Rachel Leishman of The Mary Sue highlighted actor Sam Reid’s performance, stating that his portrayal of Lestat elevates the character to new heights compared to previous versions.

Several reviewers also applauded the show’s embrace of the more eccentric and unusual elements found in Anne Rice’s novels. Kayleigh Donaldson of TheWrap called it a bold and daring piece of work, while Rotem Rusak of Nerdist described the series as “a riveting, chaotic, and incredible ride.”

Other critics highlighted the emotional depth of the story. Judy Berman of TIME noted that the series portrays Lestat as an immortal monster grappling with very human emotions and desires. Daniel Kurland of Bloody Disgusting even went so far as to call it “the best Anne Rice adaptation to date.”

With strong reviews pouring in and excitement building among fans, ‘The Vampire Lestat’ appears poised to become one of AMC’s standout genre releases. For those who have followed Anne Rice’s universe for years, the series promises a deeper exploration of one of fiction’s most iconic vampires.
