New insights have emerged for ‘The Walking Dead: Dead City’ season 3, revealing the return of some beloved characters in unexpected ways. Showrunner Seth Hoffman shared these details, as reported by RadioTimes, following the season premiere at the 65th annual Festival de Television de Monte-Carlo.

Hoffman confirmed that this new season will reintroduce characters that fans haven’t seen in quite some time. He mentioned a special non-canon episode that will delve into an alternate reality where the zombie apocalypse never occurred. In this episode, several past characters from ‘The Walking Dead’ universe will make appearances, despite not being part of the current storyline.

He stated, “I hope I can look at it from a fan’s perspective and I thought, ‘One thing that fans would want to see in this spin-off is characters that maybe we haven’t seen for a long time’.” He further added, “If you were to do an alternate reality episode where the apocalypse never happened, you could invite back some characters that haven’t been part of the franchise in a long time.” However, he did not disclose which characters would be making a comeback.

The concept of the episode aims to explore what Maggie and Negan’s lives could have looked like if the apocalypse had never taken place. Hoffman elaborated, “As I began to think about the episode more, the value from a series-wide perspective is that you get to see who Maggie and Negan would have been if the apocalypse didn’t happen.” He also mentioned that the narrative will examine whether the trauma they experienced ultimately made them better or worse individuals.

In addition to this special episode, season 3 of ‘The Walking Dead: Dead City’ will continue to follow the main storyline set in Manhattan. Maggie and Negan are anticipated to collaborate more closely as they strive to create a safer environment for a group of survivors. Meanwhile, new threats will emerge, including the Dama and the New Babylon Federation. Their circumstances will remain perilous, and the trust between the two characters will continue to be a significant aspect of the plot.

According to RadioTimes, most characters in ‘Dead City’ are original to the spin-off, with the exception of Maggie, Negan, and Hershel. The show has previously featured brief appearances from past characters, such as Lucille and Annie, in earlier seasons. Other spin-offs from ‘The Walking Dead’ have also included similar returns, highlighting the franchise’s tendency to bring back familiar faces for special moments.

Fans are already speculating about which characters might appear in the alternate reality episode. Potential returns could include figures from Maggie and Negan’s past, such as Beth or Glenn, although nothing has been officially confirmed. The showrunner has indicated that surprises will be kept under wraps until the episode airs.

‘The Walking Dead: Dead City’ season 3 will consist of eight episodes, premiering on Sunday, July 26 on AMC and AMC+. While the alternate reality episode’s release date within the season is yet to be confirmed, it is anticipated to be one of the most discussed segments of the storyline when it airs.
