This week, domestic box office charts have been making headlines, but the real excitement for ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ is unfolding thousands of miles away. While North American audiences flock to theaters for Tom Holland’s much-anticipated return, the international rollout has quietly transformed into a spectacle of its own.

Box office analysts have been engaged in discussions about just how high the film’s opening weekend could reach as new figures come in daily. It’s becoming evident that this is not shaping up to be a modest global debut by any means.

Recent reports from industry trackers indicate that ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ generated over $95 million from its Thursday overseas previews alone, bringing its international total to over $197 million. This impressive early performance has led trackers to project an overseas weekend total exceeding $575 million, with a worldwide opening now estimated at over $925 million.

These figures align with a broader trend of international success that the film has been cultivating since its release in foreign markets. In China, for instance, the film earned more than $35 million on its opening day, marking the largest single-day gross for a superhero film in the country since ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’ in 2019.

This performance in China is particularly significant given the character’s complex history there. Local analysts are now forecasting a full theatrical run in China that could reach between $255 million and $265 million, a noteworthy achievement considering that China did not screen ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ due to regulatory objections regarding the film’s climactic use of the Statue of Liberty.

The momentum is not confined to China alone. Presales in the country alone reached $18.6 million ahead of Wednesday’s release, while Indonesia reported nearly 600,000 admissions on its opening day, according to local tracking data.

Analysts’ projections for the global debut have been steadily increasing as these regional figures come in. Some are now estimating a global opening weekend between $465 million and $800 million once domestic numbers are included, a range that would position ‘Brand New Day’ among the biggest launches in the franchise’s history.

To put this range into perspective, ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ set the franchise record with a global opening of $600.5 million in 2021, ultimately reaching a worldwide total of nearly $1.9 billion. If the higher-end projections hold true, ‘Brand New Day’ could threaten that figure in its opening weekend alone rather than needing an entire run to achieve it.

Sony has maintained a conservative outlook leading up to the release, projecting an additional $270 million from international markets alongside a domestic opening near $195 million, which would have brought the global debut closer to $465 million.

However, the current situation suggests that these internal estimates may have significantly underestimated the film’s actual overseas appeal. With record-breaking numbers in China, strong attendance across Southeast Asia, and reported success in Europe, LATAM, and East Asia, the international aspect of this release appears to be exceeding even the most optimistic pre-release expectations.

Whether the final worldwide total approaches $800 million or nears the $925 million mark being discussed online, one thing is becoming increasingly clear: ‘Brand New Day’ is not only having a robust opening weekend domestically but is evolving into a truly global phenomenon.
