Those Four New ‘Avengers: Endgame Encore’ Scenes Were Secretly Shot for ‘Doomsday’
Marvel Studios has always embraced the idea of revisiting past footage to generate excitement for upcoming projects. However, the strategy behind ‘Avengers: Endgame Encore’ is more intentional than a mere nostalgia trip. Instead of simply re-releasing the 2019 blockbuster as it was, the studio took this chance to subtly reshape how viewers perceive its supposedly definitive conclusion.
This kind of retroactive storytelling carries significant risks, particularly for a film as cherished and emotionally satisfying as ‘Endgame’ originally was. Integrating new material into an established narrative without detracting from the original’s impact requires a delicate touch, and Marvel seems to have fully embraced this opportunity to serve as a bridge to December’s ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’
According to Variety, the four new scenes included in the re-release were filmed during the production of ‘Doomsday,’ directly setting the stage for the franchise’s next major installment. These additions not only extend Steve Rogers’ quiet ending with Peggy Carter but also introduce three brand-new post-credits sequences featuring Loki, Bruce Banner, and the Time Variance Authority.
The first significant addition expands on the original film’s closing moments. Steve Rogers, who chose to remain in the past to enjoy a life with Peggy Carter, is interrupted mid-dance by Loki, now clad in his Time Variance Authority uniform following his role in ‘Loki’ that involves holding the multiverse together. Although Peggy doesn’t recognize him, Loki tells her, “No, but I can help you. Both of you,” just as Steve steps out, looking equally surprised.

This scene reframes what ‘Endgame’ initially presented as a well-deserved happy ending into something more complex. Steve’s choice to stay in the past has created a branching timeline that the broader multiverse is now grappling with, implying that his romantic resolution came with unforeseen consequences.

The first post-credits scene shifts the spotlight to Bruce Banner, picking up after the events of ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day.’ Hiding in an underground bunker, Banner records a video diary revealing that he has experienced his first Hulk-related incident in over a decade and is now developing a gamma-suppression serum to prevent the Hulk from taking over again.
As Banner explains his predicament, the lights begin to flicker, indicating that something has gone awry. This moment connects directly to a larger pattern established across the four scenes: Doctor Doom is not merely waiting to make his entrance once ‘Doomsday’ begins; he is already tracking down Banner, forging his mask, and actively preparing before the sequel’s narrative even kicks off.
He used to be different.

The remaining new footage focuses on the Time Variance Authority, illustrating the extent of the multiversal crisis by the time ‘Doomsday’ begins. Collectively, all four scenes depict Doom as an active, calculating threat rather than a villain who simply appears once the sequel’s plot unfolds.
This framing also recontextualizes the decisions made by Marvel’s heroes throughout the Infinity Saga. Steve’s choice to remain in the past, once viewed solely as emotional closure, now appears as the first domino in a series of consequences the Avengers never anticipated. With the new footage filmed specifically as part of ‘Doomsday’s’ production, the Russo brothers have effectively utilized ‘Endgame Encore’ to create a direct narrative link between the two films instead of merely reissuing old content.
‘Avengers: Endgame Encore’ returned to theaters on September 25, just ahead of ‘Doomsday’s’ release on December 18.
