A beloved classic from Toho is making a comeback on Netflix. ‘The Human Vapor’, one of the studio’s most iconic science-fiction properties, is set to debut as a brand-new series worldwide on July 2.

Netflix unveiled the project with a teaser trailer. According to details shared by Netflix and the production team, this is not a direct remake of the original 1960 film. Instead, it presents a completely new narrative inspired by the film’s central theme: a man capable of transforming his body into gas.

This upcoming series is the result of a significant collaboration between Japanese and Korean creators. Produced with support from Toho, Netflix, and WOWPOINT, it brings together talent from both nations for a modern interpretation of the classic concept.

One of the most exciting aspects of this project is its visual effects team. According to the production details released with the announcement, the effects are being crafted by Shirogumi, the award-winning studio that gained international acclaim for its work on ‘Godzilla Minus One’. The creators promise that the series will blend practical sets with cutting-edge CGI to deliver a more immersive and intense viewing experience.

The creative team behind the show includes several notable figures. The series is written and executive produced by Yeon Sang-ho, known for ‘Train to Busan’, ‘Hellbound’, and ‘Parasyte: The Grey’. Directing is in the hands of Shinzo Katayama, recognized for his work on the dark drama series ‘Gannibal’.

The creators have emphasized that the show should be seen as a fresh interpretation of the original concept rather than a straightforward remake. Their aim is to take the idea in a new direction and develop it into a modern thriller.

The title character is portrayed by UTA, who is making his acting debut in the series. The production team revealed that he was chosen from a large pool of candidates. His character possesses the chilling ability to transform into gas and navigate through any barrier. Using these powers, he executes a series of attacks that leave authorities scrambling to respond.

The series also boasts a strong supporting cast. Shun Oguri stars as detective Kenji Okamoto, who leads the investigation into the enigmatic figure. Yu Aoi plays journalist Kyoko Kono, determined to uncover the truth behind the escalating crisis. Suzu Hirose and Kento Hayashi portray siblings who livestream events as they find themselves caught in the chaos. Yutaka Takenouchi appears as a former yakuza member turned successful company president.

The story kicks off with a shocking incident broadcast live on television, where a person suddenly expands and explodes in front of viewers, causing nationwide panic. Authorities soon realize that the Human Vapor is behind it. As he continues to announce future attacks before executing them, fear spreads rapidly, leading to a breakdown of social order.

‘The Human Vapor’ will consist of eight episodes and will stream exclusively on Netflix. With a renowned creative team, impressive visual effects, and a fresh take on a classic Toho property, the series is poised to become one of Netflix’s most significant international genre releases this summer.
